Luigi's Restaurant

A downtown institution since 1949 with lines out the door after every concert (it inspired "Montoni's" in the Funky Winkerbean comics). The value play is the slice-and-salad combo — a pizza slice plus a luncheon salad for $5.90, or $7.25 buried under Luigi's famous shredded cheese — so two people eat for about $12–14.50. And after 76 years of cash-only, they finally take credit cards as of 2026.
Strickland's Frozen Custard
Frozen Custard for Two
An Akron landmark in its 90th season — still churning fresh custard on the original 1936 batch freezers near the Goodyear Airdock, with vanilla, chocolate, and two specialty flavors daily. A few dollars a cone keeps two well under $20 (opening day 2026 sold 90-cent smalls for the 90th birthday). Seasonal — reopens early March.
The Lockview
Split-a-Grilled-Cheese Play — about $20
Downtown's gourmet grilled-cheese-and-craft-beer room — goldfish crackers on every sandwich, Lawson's chip dip energy throughout. Prices have crept: grilled cheeses now run $11–13, so two sandwiches alone clear the bar. The under-$20 play is splitting a sandwich with an upgraded side and a cup of soup. Now open for lunch too; closed Sunday.
Mr. Zub's Deli & Bar
Split a 10-Inch — about $17
A Highland Square deli-bar since 2009 piling over-the-top sandwiches named for movie characters — the Uncle Rico, the Royal Tenenbaum — plus pizza, wings, and 20-plus beers. Sandwiches run $12–17 by size; split a 10-inch (about $17) and you're under the line. The $5.25 tots are genuinely enough for two but push the ticket just over — order them knowing. Open late.
Wally Waffle
Breakfast for Two
Akron's beloved breakfast spot since 1975 — creative waffles, chicken and waffles, omelets, and syrup served in heated glass bottles. The weekday special (eggs, Wally Fries or grits, and a breakfast meat) runs under $7, so two eat a full breakfast for well under $20. Highland Square original plus a Montrose location.
Taqueria La Loma
Tacos for Two
An East Akron taqueria with an attached Mexican market — al pastor carved off a slow-turning spit, plus tortas, tamales, and pozole. À la carte tacos run about $3.50–4 each, so two people eating two or three apiece land at $16–20. One warning: the birria order is $20 by itself — stay on the spit side of the menu.
The Original Bob's Hamburg
Burgers Since 1931 — Two Under $20
Akron's oldest restaurant — a tiny East Avenue shack flipping burgers since 1931, crowned "Ohio's #1 Hole-in-the-Wall Burger Joint." Delivery menus show singles around $7 and doubles at $10, and the counter runs cheaper — two singles plus a shared fry stay under $20. Cash only at the original; a Highland Square outpost serves inside Ray's Pub.
Hamburger Station

Jim Lowe learned sliders working at the legendary Thacker's (1920–1980), then opened his own in 1975 — mustard-pickle-onion burgers amid horse-themed decor, Akron's answer to White Castle. The Speed Pack (two sliders, fries, and a 16-oz drink) runs just under $8, so two people ride out for about $16 — or share a 12-pack of hamburgers at $13.49.
Menches Bros.
Tuesday 1885 Duo — $18.85 for Two
The Menches family claims they invented the hamburger at the 1885 Erie County Fair — and the descendants still run the griddle in Green. The Tuesday 1885 Duo is the headline: two original burgers, two fries, and two soft drinks for $18.85, drinks included. Weekdays bring $9.99 lunch specials (two for $19.98). Worth the short drive south.
Fred's Diner
North Hill Breakfast — Two From About $15
The old-school North Hill greasy spoon locals call Akron's best breakfast — but check the calendar, because it's only open Friday through Monday. Breakfast sandwiches (two eggs and meat) run $7.29 — about $15 for two with coffee room — while the three-egg cheese omelette with homefries and toast ($9.69) puts a pair right at the wire. Expect a Sunday wait.
Mary Coyle Ice Cream
Hot Fudge for Two — Well Under $20
An Akron ice cream lineage running back to 1937, holding down Highland Square since 1963 — with NORKA soda and Ben Heggy's chocolates on the shelves for the full all-Akron trifecta. Around $10 covers two scoops with a topping, so a sundae date for two lands well under $20. Closed Sun–Mon.
Nepali Kitchen
Momos for Two — About $18
The original sit-down of North Hill's "Little Nepal" — the Bhutanese-Nepali community that began resettling here around 2008 and remade the old Italian neighborhood. Everything is scratch-made: a veg momo plate ($8.50) plus pork or chicken momos ($9.50–9.75) feeds two for about $18, with chow mein around $10 if dumplings aren't your thing.
Momo House
Two Momo Orders — $19.98
A Nepali restaurant and bar opened in 2022 by Sabitra Thulung, in Akron since 2007 — the chicken momo earned a "Taste This" nod from Signal Akron. Steamed or fried momos run $9.99 (chicken and chili momos $10.99, thukpa noodle soup $9.99), so two orders land at $19.98 on the nose.
Lyeh Thai Restaurant
Pad Thai for Two — About $21
The Mon-Burmese story on North Main — owners Rot Sorn and Mehm Hapo, refugees from Myanmar who arrived in 2004, opened this Thai kitchen in 2020 in the old Parasson's building. Pad thai runs $10.50, so two plates land at $21 — a dollar over our line and worth it. Split one noodle dish and an appetizer to stay closer to the cap.
DeVitis Italian Market
Italian Subs — Two for About $12–15
Sixty-plus years of family-run Italian grocery on East Tallmadge — the surviving anchor of North Hill's original Italian era, now neighbors with Little Nepal. The 8-inch Angelo's Italian sub (salami, ham, capicola, provolone) lists at $5.99 and the meatball sub at $8.99, so two people walk out fed for $12–15 — with house sauces and the cannoli case as temptation.
The Pierogi Lady
A Dozen Pierogi — $16
The region's church-basement pierogi tradition gone pro — 100-plus rotating varieties, hand-pinched in South Akron. At $8 for six, a dozen split two ways is a $16 comfort-food dinner. Mind the format: hours are limited and much of the trade is take-home — call ahead if you want them hot.
Sanabel Middle East Bakery
Fresh Pita & M'jadara — Two for About $17
A Lebanese family bakery in South Akron with pita baked fresh every morning and a vegan falafel cult following. The m'jadara — lentils and rice — runs $8.50, so two plates are $17, and the falafel sandwiches and spinach or za'atar pies price low enough to keep any combination under the line.
White House Chicken
Barberton Chicken — Tuesday Dinners About $7
Barberton's Serbian-rooted fried chicken is one of America's great regional dishes — lard-fried to order with "hot sauce," the tomato-rice relish that comes with everything. White House has fried since the 1940s, and Tuesday is the play: roughly $7 dinners put a chicken feast for two around $14–15, while the everyday 6-piece boneless wing dinner ($9.98 with three sides) keeps two under $20 all week. Belgrade Gardens started it all in 1933 but has priced past our line — White House carries the deal.
Al's Corner Restaurant

Twisted Tomato

Family-owned since 2020 under the motto "If it's PIZZA, it's POSSIBLE" — build-your-own pies from a 10-inch small up to a 20-inch, 12-slice "Boss." Two small cheese pizzas run $9 each = $18, and the weekday 11am–3pm lunch window is even kinder: small cheese $8, or two slices and a can for $5, so two can lunch for $10–16. The Cuyahoga Falls flagship reopened July 2026 with a brand-new oven, and slices go half-off in the 2:30–3:30 happy hour.

Wallhaven's Mexican spot, known for all-natural margaritas with fresh-squeezed fruit — one arrives in a carved pineapple. The budget play is lunch (11am–2:30pm): the Speedy Gonzalez runs $8 and the burrito-with-rice-and-beans combo $9, so two eat for $16–18. At dinner, two spinach enchilada plates ($10 each) land at $20.00 on the line, before tax — most other dinner pairs push past.

"The coolest place of Portage Lakes" — a lakefront Mexican tequila bar on West Turkeyfoot Lake Rd where boaters dock and dine. Proper entrees for two blow the budget (street-taco plates run $14.99 each), so the under-$20 play is a quesadilla ($8.99) plus the 3-piece chicken tenders and fries ($10.99) — $19.98, two cents to spare. Their own ordering page carries a "seasonally closed" label in the off-season, so call ahead outside of summer.
Antonio's Pizza Express

A family pizzeria since 1967 — the LoSchiavo family now runs about 16 Antonio's shops around Northeast Ohio (Copley/Fairlawn, Green, Wadsworth, Medina, North Canton). A medium 12-inch build-your-own at $14.95 splits two ways with room for a topping; the stretch build — small 9-inch pizza plus a calzone, $10 each — lands at $20.00 on the line, before tax. Delivery has a $20 minimum, so the $14.95 medium is a pickup deal.
Fiesta Jalapeños

Medina's family Mexican grill outgrew its Pearl Road strip spot and opened on Grande Blvd in March 2024. The rotating "Speedy" lunch specials (weekdays 11am–2:30pm) start at $6.75 — Tuesday's burrito-taco-and-rice Speedy #2 puts two lunches at $13.50, Friday's chimichangas at $15. Dinner pairs run about $23, so this one is strictly a lunch-window deal.
Master Pizza
Medium Build-Your-Own — $16.79
"Taste Above All since 1955" — the Cleveland-born chain known for soft, pan-baked Cleveland-style crust and Detroit-style squares. A medium build-your-own (12 inches, 8 slices) feeds two at $16.79 on their own Slice ordering menu, or go small pizza ($10.79) plus Parmesan Bites ($7.19) for $17.98. Wings are the trap — 8 jumbos run $19.19 alone. The Twinsburg shop doesn't open until 4pm on Mondays.
Eating cheap in Akron: Swensons is the rite of passage — pull in, flip on your headlights, and a Curb Server sprints out with your Galley Boy (and yes, the Menches brothers really do claim they invented the hamburger — their descendants still grill in Green). Highland Square (Mr. Zub's, Wally Waffle, Mary Coyle) and downtown (Luigi's, The Lockview) are the densest walkable clusters, and Luigi's famous 76-year cash-only era ended in 2026 — cards now welcome. Don't skip North Hill: the Bhutanese-Nepali community has made it "Little Nepal," and two momo plates run under $20 at any of its kitchens. Fifteen minutes southwest, Barberton fries its legendary Serbian-style chicken in lard the way it has since the 1930s — go on a Tuesday for White House Chicken's special. Born in Tallmadge when brothers Sam and Chuck Owen started slinging pies in the late '80s, now 60-plus Ohio locations that never left home — Firestone Park, North Hill, The Valley, and Lakemore all have one. Handel's Homemade Ice Cream

Alice Handel started scooping out of her husband's Youngstown gas station in July 1945, and 80 years later the chain still churns fresh in-store daily. Cones and dishes run about $3.75 small and $4.95 medium, so two mediums land near $10 — a full dessert stop for half the twenty. Three Akron-area windows: East Market, Green, and the Tallmadge line; franchise prices drift a little by store.
Hot Head Burritos

Dayton-born in 2007 and still almost entirely an Ohio operation.
