Scenic Drive-In
Home of the Original Knockout Burger · Since 1956
A genuine slice of cruising-era Modesto — a young George Lucas reportedly ate here while at the nearby elementary school, and the Knockout burger (Angus patty with a jalapeño kick) still earns the name. Add crinkle fries and one of their thick, oddly-creative shakes and you've got the whole drive-in experience. Generous portions, fair prices; two eat for around $18. Closed Sun.
Web's Burgers
Modesto's Original Drive-In · Since 1942
Downtown's old-school burger window, running since the '40s with a tidy '70s-diner interior and krinkle-cut fries that regulars swear by. The Big Ben is the signature, but the little Willie sliders land around a couple bucks each, so it's easy to build a full meal on the cheap. No-frills, friendly, and a piece of Modesto history; two eat for around $14. Weekdays only — call ahead.
Fast Eddie's MOAB
The Meal On A Bun · Tully Rd Classic
MOAB stands for Meal On A Bun, and that's the move — a cooked-to-order burger stacked with all the fixings, plus beer-battered onion rings and made-to-order shakes in a wall of flavors. It's a Modesto childhood memory for a lot of folks, with pinball in the corner and a Navy-themed wall of memorabilia. Big food, small prices; two eat for around $16. Check hours before you go.
Viva Taqueria
Asada & Al Pastor · Loaded Salsa Bar
A bright Yosemite Blvd taquería with a fountain in the middle and a glass wall looking out on the boulevard. The carne asada and al pastor come well-seasoned and generously stuffed, the fried tilapia gets quiet raves, and the salsa bar is the real draw — pile on the fresh stuff and turn a couple tacos into a feast. Fair prices, friendly counter; two eat for around $17. Open daily.
Birrieria Fernandez
Quesabirria Off the Truck · Consommé to Dip
A Yosemite Blvd taco truck built around one thing done right: slow-stewed beef birria, griddled into crispy-edged quesabirria with melty cheese and a cup of consommé alongside for dunking. Order it with rice and beans, ask for the hot salsa on the side, and you've got a serious meal. Open early to late, every day; two eat for around $18. Cash-friendly, fast, no fuss.
El Coco Loco Mariscos
Nayarit-Style Seafood · Ceviche & Baja Tacos
Don't let the industrial-area address scare you off — this is some of the freshest Mexican seafood in town, Nayarit-style. The shrimp ceviche is plump and bright, the Baja fish tacos shatter-crisp, and on weekends they fire whole fish al carbón. Split a ceviche tostada and a few tacos and you'll eat like royalty; two eat for around $20. Worth finding.
Pho Bac Noodle Palace
Rich Pho Broth · Off McHenry Ave
An unassuming McHenry-area neighborhood spot that locals quietly call the best bowl in Modesto. The broth is deep and fragrant, the noodles silky, and the portions land on the generous side — order brisket-and-meatball or a vermicelli bowl with grilled pork and the spring rolls on the side. Friendly counter, fresh herbs, fair prices; two eat for around $18. A genuine hidden gem.
Me'Mo's Middle Eastern
Family-Run Lebanese · Halal · House Garlic Sauce
A tiny, big-hearted McHenry Ave kitchen where Me'mo's recipes carry the whole show — halal meats slow-spun on the rotisserie, fresh-fried falafel, and a garlic sauce good enough to order extra fries just to dip. The signature loaded shawarma sandwich comes packed with fries, pickles, hummus and salad on the side, so it's easy to share and add a falafel. Two eat for around $19. Closed Sun.
Southeast Asia Grill
Cambodian & Lao · Skewers + Crispy Egg Rolls
A small family takeout shop (and a Modesto Certified Farmers Market regular) cooking Cambodian and Lao-leaning plates with real care. The grilled chicken skewers, crispy little egg rolls and fried green beans are the crowd favorites, and the combo plate piles on chow mein, fried rice, an egg roll and a skewer. Split a combo and add egg rolls; two eat for around $18. Limited days — catch them at the market too.
Old Mill Cafe
Modesto's Oldest Diner · Giant Omelets
Often called the oldest restaurant in town, this downtown breakfast-and-lunch room runs on regulars, a center counter with stools, and omelets the size of a hubcap. Portions are famously huge — locals split a plate and still take half home — so a shared omelet with hash browns and toast plus a pancake side feeds two easily. Friendly, fast, unpretentious; two eat for around $20. Daily till 2pm.
Mr. T's Delicate Donut Shop
24-Hour MoTown Legend · Maple Bars to Die For
A decades-old, family-run donut institution that locals will happily rank above any chain that dares move in across the street. Light, fresh, fried-all-day rings and fritters, famous buttermilk maple bars, apple fritters and blueberry fritters — and it's open 24 hours, so the 3 a.m. craving is covered. A dozen runs about $8, coffee's barely over a buck; two eat for around $12. Bring cash. Open 24/7.
Panaderia La Michoacana
Pan Dulce · $1 Custard Empanadas · Tres Leches
Follow your nose down Yosemite Blvd to a classic Central Valley panadería stacked with warm conchas, orejas and a custard empanada that runs about a dollar — soft bread, not-too-sweet filling, the kind of thing you grew up grabbing on the way home. The strawberry tres leches gets rave reviews, and around Día de los Reyes the roscas are the move. Cheap, fresh, family-friendly; two eat for around $10. Open daily.
El Rey del Taco #3
Taco Truck Since 1989 · $5 Burritos Till 2am
A Crows Landing Rd taco truck that's been a street-food fixture for 35-plus years, slinging proper carne asada, tacos de cabeza, tortas and a fat regular burrito that's still a steal even after a recent bump to around $5. The neighborhood's gritty, the parking's a gravel lot, and the tacos are worth the trip — folks drive in from the Bay just for these. Open daily into the small hours; two eat for around $14. Cash is king.
Noah's Hof Brau
Carvery + Chinese-American · Downtown 50-Yr Institution
One of Modesto's great oddball treasures: an old-school hof brau carvery — carved-to-order turkey and roast beef on jus-soaked French rolls, à la San Francisco's Tommy's Joynt — that long ago grew a full Chinese-American kitchen alongside it. The BBQ pork and potstickers are the move now, but you can mix a carved sandwich with a combo plate. Counter-serve, multi-generational, portions big enough for leftovers; two eat for around $18.
Sacred Slice
Downtown NY & Detroit Slices · Hot Honey & Ricotta
A husband-and-wife operation that grew from a catering truck into the slice spot a lot of locals now call the best pizza in the county — crisp New York rounds with no flop, square Detroit slices, house-made ranch and a ricotta-and-hot-honey number worth the hype. Lunch is slices-only, so two can each grab a couple and stay cheap; whole pies (dinner) run higher. Tucked in the downtown food plaza; two eat for around $18.
💡 Pro tip: All deals are community-verified but prices and availability change. Several of Modesto's classic drive-ins and family spots keep short or weekday-only hours — always check the restaurant's website, app or social before making a special trip. If something's expired, flag it on our main directory so we can update it.
