Boston is expensive, and it's eating its own cheap-eats legends: when we re-checked every card on this page against menus the restaurants control, the 2018-era prices collapsed — an "$8" curry platter is really $14.89, a "$14 for two" pho pair now runs $24–30. What survived is real, and in August 2026 we went looking for more: a fresh sweep of 797 Boston restaurants added thirteen spots whose own menus still print a two-person meal under the line — a $3.27 cheese slice at Broadway's Best, Santarpio's $16 cheese pie, a $5 happy-hour smashburger at Lucky's, an $8.99 cheeseburger in Dorchester at 2am, four Pueblan tacos for about $14 at Angela's. Everything below is grouped by neighborhood, and every dollar figure comes from an owner menu — where none exists, we say so.

The North End's legendary lunch line — thick Sicilian squares, arancini and calzones served until the trays run out, usually well before closing. Two things to know before you go, and one before you search: nobody controls a real website for this place, and the “menus” that top a search for it belong to a network of clone sites we won't cite or link — so we won't print a slice price either. What we can verify: 289 Hanover St, lunch only, cash only, sells out daily. Get in line before noon; when it's gone, it's gone. (617) 227-5709.

Whole Cheese Pie — $19.95 💡 Counter Slices Unverified
The North End's giant-slice standby, repriced with what the owner storefront actually shows: there is no by-the-slice section on their own ordering menu. A whole cheese pie is $19.95 — at the line for two — and the specialty pies ($26.99–36.99) are well over. The counter still sells the famous quarter-of-a-pie slices at what regulars report is about $6, but we can't verify that online, so ask at the counter. Pickup only.

The OG + a Bacon Egg & Cheese — $16 💡 Breakfast only
A tiny Commercial Street breakfast counter on the Waterfront edge of the North End, and one of the few places downtown whose own menu still prints a single-digit sandwich. The OG is $7 and the bacon, sausage or ham egg-and-cheese are $9 each — one of each is $16, two OGs is $14. Where it stops working: the Basic Toast ($11), Artie Party ($11.50), breakfast grilled cheese ($12.50), the Lox and Croque Madame ($14 apiece) all pair to well over the line, and every lunch sandwich is $13.50–15. Order off the top of the board and you're fine; order off the bottom and you're at $28.

Gene Wu's Xi'an counter in Downtown Crossing, and for years the cheapest owner-verified meal on this page — now narrowly beaten by Broadway's Best in Southie, though this is still the cheapest sit-down meal downtown. Their own ordering menu: the cumin pork flatbread sandwich is $6.30 and the lamb version $6.85, so one of each is $13.15. The hand-pulled noodles ($9.40, two for $18.80) squeak under too — but the noodle soups at $12.55–14.65 blow the budget for two, and two noodle orders plus any drink goes over. Watch the noodles being pulled while you wait.

Chinatown's big cart-service dim sum hall, carded honestly: the owner menu lists every dumpling, bao and turnip cake but prints no prices (“subject to change”), and at the $6.50–9 a dish that circulates, under-$20 for two means roughly three shared plates — a good light lunch, not the spectacular spread we used to promise. Our old hours were wrong too: weekdays it opens at 11am, weekends at 10–10:30am. There is no 9am seating.

The 2010 food-truck-contest winner that took over the beloved New Saigon Sandwich storefront at 696 Washington St — the natural Chinatown banh mi card, if the prices verify. They don't yet: every ordering page bot-walled our checks, so there's no owner number to print. Third-party menus put the basic banh mi at $7.50 and the #1 Special at $9.50, so two basic sandwiches land around $15–19 — but two of the $11.50 lemongrass steak is $23, over. The hours we list are third-party too. Our top field-check priority; call before a special trip.

The Pilgrim — $18.95 💡 Right Around $20, Literally
The South End diner where Bill Clinton ate, and the one card on this page whose famous number matched the owner menu to the penny: the Pilgrim — turkey, stuffing, cranberry, gravy — is $18.95, a split-and-share plate that lands two people under the line with a nickel to spare. Order separately and the math tightens fast: three-egg breakfast plates are $10.95 ($21.90 for two), the $9.95 omelets and pancakes are the only plate pair that stays under at $19.90, and a $3.50 coffee tips any of it over. “Right around $20” is the honest promise here.

Two Egg & Cheese Sandwiches — $10 💡 Before 10:30am
A weekday-only Albany Street canteen in the South End whose breakfast board carries a $5 egg and cheese — two of them is $10, the cheapest owner-printed pair we found in the neighborhood. Eggs al forno is $9. That's the whole under-$20 window: it closes at 10:30am, and after it the menu jumps hard — sandwiches are $14–19, plates $15–20, and the lobster-bacon-tomato is $28. Pastries run $2.75–5.50 and coffee $2.75–4, so two sandwiches and two coffees still lands around $16. Closed weekends entirely.

The rare Newbury Street address that publishes real slice prices on its own site: cheese $3.50, pepperoni $4.00, specialty $5.00. Two slices apiece runs $14–20 depending on how fancy you get, and a whole small cheese pie is $13 (pepperoni $14) — the cheapest way to feed two on this block by a wide margin. The East Boston store prices its non-pepperoni slices at $4.50 and adds a burger and disco fries. Skip the sandwiches, which run $11–13 and put two people over on their own. Slices are dine-in and takeout only at Back Bay.

A Theatre District counter open to 2:30am on weekends, and a card that only works one way. The owner menu prices a medium cheese pizza at $18 — that feeds two under the line with two dollars to spare. What doesn't work: the subs. Small subs are $11.75 each, so two of them is $23.50 before a drink, and every specialty pizza starts at $19.95. Order the plain medium pie, add $5.75 fries if you're splitting one sub instead, and don't let anyone talk you into the large.

The two thinnest neighborhoods on this page, for opposite reasons. Fenway has real depth left to check — dozens of candidates we haven't priced yet. Cheese Pizza — $16.45 💡 Open to 2:30am Fri–Sat
A Queensberry Street standby a block off Fenway Park, and the cheapest whole pie we could verify on this side of the city: cheese $16.45, which feeds two under the line. Margherita is the other one that clears at $17.99; pepperoni is $18.50. After that the menu leaves the budget entirely — most specialty pies are $22.50–26.50. The subs don't work either at $12.99–16.99 a piece. No by-the-slice section on the owner menu, so this is a whole-pie card. Open to 2:30am Friday and Saturday, which is the actual reason anyone orders it.

Two Happy-Hour Smashburgers — $10 💡 Lucky Hour 4–7pm daily
The happy-hour answer in Fort Point, and the only one in this sweep whose specials menu is published with prices on the restaurant's own site. The Lucky Hour runs 4–7pm every day, in-house only, and the $5 tier includes a single smashburger — two of them is $10, the cheapest sit-down burger pair we could verify in the city. Also at $5: fried cheese curds, pretzel bites, fried pickles. The $6 tier is pork dumplings, kung pao cauliflower and chicken empanadas; $7 gets wings, pork belly bao or spinach dip. Two burgers plus two $5 sides is exactly $20 — add a drink and you're over, since even the High Life is $5.

Two Dogs Each + Fries + Drinks — $17.05 💡 Skip the $9.95 Rings
The Castle Island stand since 1951, harbor view free. The owner menu makes the call for you: hot dogs are $3.60, so a dog each plus a second round, shared fries ($3.95) and two drinks ($2.95 each) is $17.05. The cheeseburger version of the same order is $20.85 — cheeseburgers run $5.50 — and the famous hand-cut onion rings are a $9.95 trap that sinks any under-$20 build they join. Order dogs; that's the Southie move anyway. It isn't officially summer until Sullivan's opens.

Boston's burrito institution — the owner site now lists fifteen locations, including the South Boston store (our old card said eight). Owner menu: a regular burrito is $9.45, so two are $18.90; the super at $10.45 makes the pair $20.90, so “the super pushes it” turns out to be exactly right. There's zero headroom for drinks at the regular price — it's tap water or over the line.

A Southie counter on P Street with a fully priced menu on its own site and more genuine under-$20 builds than anywhere else we checked in Boston. Two BLTs is $19.90. Two fried-egg sandwiches ($5 each) plus two coffees ($3 each) is $16. Two eggs is $7, a hot dog $5, grilled cheese $7, three buttermilk pancakes $8. The ceiling arrives fast — clubs are $12.95, cheeseburgers $11.95, steak tips and eggs $16.95 — but the bottom third of this menu is real. The catch is the calendar: they're open four days a week, mornings only.

The cheapest owner-published price we turned up anywhere in this sweep: a cheese slice at $3.27. Four of them is $13.08 for two people. A small 10-inch cheese pie is $11.00 and a large 16-inch is $19.00 — still under the line on its own. Basic ziti or linguini is $8.75 a plate, so two pastas is $17.50. Large subs at $10.75 are the one trap: two of those is $21.50. Open until 3am on Friday and Saturday, which makes this the East Broadway answer to a 2am problem.

A family-run Maverick Square counter slinging Mexican, Salvadoran and Colombian plates. We can't print owner math here, and the reason is almost funny: their own menu PDF is literally titled “sin precios” — without prices — and the ordering systems block automated checks. Third-party menus put street tacos around $2, which would feed two comfortably under $20, but treat that as a lead, not a fact. One fix from our old card: they open at 10am, not “early morning” — and run to 11pm daily.
Eagle Hill's Pueblan kitchen, and the clearest owner-verified taco math in the city: veggie $3.00, chicken and pork $3.50, steak, fish and al pastor $4.00, chorizo and the taco árabe $4.50. Two tacos each lands between $12 and $18 depending on the fillings. Breakfast is the other way in — egg combo, cheese omelette and the breakfast burrito are $10 apiece, served until 3pm. Stay off the antojitos if you're counting: the guacamole is $14, nachos $13, queso fundido $12 and Angela's Burger $16. There's a second Orient Heights location on Bennington St.

The East Boston institution, open since 1903, and its own menu still prices the plain Italian cheese pizza at $16.00 — a whole pie that feeds two under the line with four dollars left. That's the order. Everything above it climbs fast: one topping is $18.00, any meat $18.50, and combinations run $20.50–26.00. The barbecue side of the house — the lamb and steak skewers everyone tells you to get — is $17.50 each, and a single sausage or the zesty lamb sausage is $10.00, so the classic pizza-plus-skewers order lands north of $33. Chicken tips are the cheap skewer at $13.00. Cash culture, no reservations, and a room that hasn't changed in decades.

Meridian Street Mexican and Salvadorian, open until 2am every day, with a fully priced owner menu. Chicken, pork adobada and chicharrón tacos are $3.75, steak and vegetarian $4.00, chipotle shrimp $5.00 and braised lengua $5.50 — four of the cheap ones is $15. The pupusas are the other play at $3.75 apiece: two pupusas and two tacos is about $15. Where it breaks: burritos are $12.50–15.00, so two burritos is $25 and up, and the three-taco "Tacos Special" is $16 — worse value than ordering four à la carte. Note the domain: lahaciendaboston.com is the real one. Several lookalike sites trade on this name and we don't link them.

The Savin Hill Vietnamese bakery — a 2025 Boston Legacy Business — baking its own baguettes for crackly banh mi. Price honesty: their website has been down on every check we've run, so there's no owner number to print. Our old “$6–7 a sandwich” is stale; delivery-app listings run $9.29–10.29, which usually means an in-store counter price around $7.50–8.50 — so two sandwiches likely land near $16, and adding two Vietnamese iced coffees will crest $20. Call for today's board: (617) 265-7171.
Two Giant Dogs + Fries — Likely $16–17 💡 Cash Only · Call First
"Home of the World's Largest Hot Dog" — a Blue Hill Ave walk-up window since 1935 and one of Boston's last true hot dog stands. Price honesty: its ordering listing confirms it's open but renders no prices, so there's no owner number to print. Third parties peg the giant dogs at about $6–6.50, so two dogs plus shared fries should land around $16–17 pre-tax — treat that as a lead, not a fact. The listing shows hours to 1am, which we also haven't verified. Bring cash; the window takes nothing else. Street parking.

Two Orders of Fusion Bites — $16.50 💡 Late night to 4am
A Morton Street halal counter that runs to 4am Thursday through Saturday — the only late-night option we could price in this part of the city. The build that works is the $8.25 Fusion Bites, twelve pieces with a soda included; two of them is $16.50 with drinks handled. The Trio Mix rice bowl is $4.99 and wings or drumsticks are $2.25 a piece, so a mixed order stays comfortably under. What doesn't clear: the meals. The cheapest is the $10.99 slider meal, and two of those is $21.98 — just over, before anything else.

A Columbia Road counter in Dorchester that does the two things this page is short on — a cheap burger and a cheap pie — and does them until nearly 3am. The owner menu prices a cheeseburger at $8.99 (bacon cheeseburger $9.99), so two is $17.98. A whole cheese pizza is $12.99, which feeds two with room for a $2.99 soda each and still lands at $18.97. Specialty pizzas jump to $16.99 and subs run $12.99–13.99, so two subs is over. Fries are $6.99 and onion rings $7.99 — sides are where this one gets away from you.

The slice counter directly across from TD Garden, and the rare Causeway St spot where two people eat for under $17. Owner menu: a cheese slice is $3.95, so four — two each — is $15.80; swap two for pepperoni ($4.45) and it's $16.80, still under with room. These are the big floppy slices the Bruins and Celtics crowds line up for pre-game — "The Tatum" sub is on the wall, but slices are the play. Open till 11:30pm Thu–Sat for the late games; closed Sundays.

Fresh-baked Palestinian manakish — flatbreads stretched and fired to order with za'atar, cheese or spiced lamb — in the heart of Allston's student strip. Owner ordering menu: the Za'atar Special is $8.49, so two are $16.98 pre-tax. The plain za'atar flatbread reportedly runs about $4.50, which would make the pair trivial, but $8.49 is the owner-published number we print. Open until 3am Friday and Saturday — one of the only late-night under-$20 date meals in Boston.
Chimi + Dominican Omelette — $18.99 💡 Skip the Cubanos
A 30-plus-year Dominican-Cuban counter on Centre St in Jamaica Plain, open till 11 every night. Owner menu math, and here the order matters: a chimi is $10 and the Dominican omelette $8.99, so the pair is $18.99 — or a chimi plus two $3 empanadas is $16. Said plainly: two of the famous cubanos is $24, well over, and two chimis is $20.00 flat — which fails a strict under-$20 test by definition. Steer the order and this is one of JP's best cheap nights.

A Winter Hill Salvadoran-Mexican staple since 1994 — just over the line in Somerville, and labeled that way. The owner menu lists everything and prices nothing, so these are honest estimates, not owner math: pupusas run about $3.99 now (our old “$2.99, two for $4” is stale), tacos about $3.50, burritos $7–9. Two people building plates likely land at $17–19. The long hours are the quiet superpower — 8:30am to 11pm, every day.

A Huron Village storefront in Cambridge, family-run since 1971, cash only (ATM inside). Repriced from the owner menu: a cheese slice is $3.50, pepperoni $4.25 (our old card said $3.75), and the thick Sicilian $5.00 (was $4.50). Four cheese slices for two is $14, four pepperoni $17, and a mixed round of Sicilian and pepperoni $18.50 — every four-slice play stays under $20. One footer fix: Sunday is 4pm–10pm only, so don't roll up for Sunday lunch.

💡 Pro tip: Timing is the whole game in Boston. Galleria Umberto sells out daily — the line forms before noon. Gene's closes at 6:30pm and all day Sunday, Mike's is 7am–2pm only, Armando's doesn't open until 4pm on Sundays, and Sullivan's is seasonal. The new additions are worse: the Galley Diner is open four days a week and shuts at 1pm, FAI Canteen's $5 egg-and-cheese window closes at 10:30am and not at all on weekends, and Sunny Girl stops at 2pm on weekdays. In the other direction, Boston Pizza & Grill and La Hacienda both run past 2am nightly, Broadway's Best and College Pizza to 3am and 2:30am on weekends, and the Halal Fusion to 4am Thursday through Saturday. Lucky's $5 smashburger is the narrowest window of all — 4 to 7pm, in-house only. Prices move fast here — check the restaurant's own site or call before a special trip, and if something's expired, flag it on our main directory.
🚫 The Honest Cuts
This page carried 17 cards. Three didn't survive an August 2026 owner-source check, and they're listed here with the numbers rather than quietly deleted:
Punjabi Dhaba (Inman Square, Cambridge) — the hardest cut. Our card promised an $8 Curry Special and “about $5” biryani; the owner's own menu PDF prices the Special Curry Platter at $14.89 and chicken biryani at $15.09 — roughly double. Two platters is $29.78, and there's no realistic build that gets two people under $20. Still cash-only, still beloved, still on the steel trays — just not a 2-for-$20 deal anymore.
Machu Chicken (Union Square, Somerville) — our own card admitted the half-chicken order runs “about $24, a touch over $20,” which fails a strict under-$20 page on its face. Its website is now a dead parked domain, so there's no owner menu to re-check. (617) 623-7972 if you want to split one anyway.
Pho 2000 (Fields Corner, Dorchester) — cut for staleness, not quality. Our “$6–7 a bowl, $14 for two” reads like 2018; Boston pho in 2026 typically runs $12–15 a bowl, which would put two at $24–30, and the owner site has blocked every check we've made. Still open (closed Tuesdays, (617) 436-1908) — it comes back the day someone reads us today's menu.
What the August 2026 discovery sweep didn't find: a city-proper roast beef under budget — Cusser's runs wagyu prices, Kelly's only Boston location is airside at Logan, and the true three-way beefs are all North Shore, out of scope. Two Chinatown legends are also gone for good: Hing Shing Pastry closed in 2023, and New Saigon Sandwich is permanently closed — its 696 Washington St space is now Banh Mi Huong Que, carded above.
A warning about lookalikes: Boston's cheap-eats icons attract clone domains — Galleria Umberto's search results are dominated by a network of fake menu sites, and machuchicken.com is a parked shell. We link only owner-controlled sites, and where none exists, we link nothing.

CPK — the chain that invented the BBQ chicken pizza in 1985 — prices like the sit-down restaurant it is: two people each ordering a main start at $33.58. The honest under-$20 route is to split. Every pizza is a 6-slice thin crust, and the cheapest, the Margherita, reads $17.69 at the 800 Boylston St. store on CPK's own online ordering, August 2026 — $8.85 a head when two people share one. The Traditional Cheese is $18.69 and the Mac 'N' Cheese, the cheapest main plate at $16.79, splits the same way. With actual kids along the math turns kind: every CPKids pizza and pasta entrée is $8.49. The traps are ordering like two separate customers and the specialty list — pizzas beyond the basic three start at $19.69, and drinks push even a split pizza to the line, so it's a water-and-share play. CPK runs exactly three price tiers nationally — $16.69 to $18.69 for the same Margherita — so confirm at yours; the dine-in menu can read slightly different from the ordering site.

The Cheyenne-born West-Mex chain (1969, now 325+ stores) keeps a downtown store at 77 Summer St — no longer “the lone East Coast beachhead” we once called it, since the chain's own locations index lists a Leominster, MA store too. What matters: all four chain-published Daily Deals checked out against owner sources in March 2026 — $1.39 crispy tacos all day Tuesday (they invented Taco Tuesday and held the trademark until 2023), $3.19 Meat & Potato breakfast burrito Wednesday, $2.79 Taco Bravo Thursday, and $1.39 crispy tacos after 8pm every night. Tuesday math: eight tacos for two is $11.12, Potato Olés on the side. Prices exclude tax and participating stores vary — confirm at yours.

Two McChicken $5 Meal Deals — About $10 — Check the App
The McValue board still lists the $5 McChicken Meal Deal — McChicken, 4-piece McNuggets, small fries, small drink — and the $6 McDouble version, which puts two people around $10–12. Honesty note: McDonald's own site has been blocking our checks, so those numbers come from its indexed pages rather than a live read — and Boston-proper stores price high, so spot-check the app at your store before you count on $10.
