O'Betty's Red Hot
Two Dogs + Chili Cheese Fries — $17–19
A burlesque-themed Uptown dog joint since 2003 — all-beef natural-casing dogs named for burlesque stars (the basic Gypsy $5.50, specialty dogs $6.50), brats, tofu dogs, and fresh-cut fries. Two dogs plus a small chili cheese fries to share ($6) run $17–18.50, and even the worst case — two specialty dogs with a large ($7) — is $20.00 on the line, before tax. Tue–Sat till 3am (dining room to 8:30pm, late-nite window after). Closed Sun–Mon.
Big Mamma's Burritos
Two Burritos — $17.90
An Ohio University late-night staple on Court Street — huge made-to-order burritos, bowls, and salads. Two regular burritos (Buffalo $8.95 up to $9.95) run $17.90–19.90, or two baby burritos plus shared chips and salsa for $17.40 — but skip the drinks: the burrito-chips-drink combos are $12–14 a head. The ~5-lb Mega Mamma challenge is real ($25 entry, refunded with a t-shirt if you finish inside an hour). Closed Monday; till 3am Wed–Sat.
Bagel Street Deli
Two Bagelwiches — $16.25–18.50
An OU institution since 1993 where you build any bagel sandwich you can dream up — toasted and steamed, ~60 combos with names like Chris Farley and Seinfeld's Secret — in a narrow shop with foil-sculpture-covered walls. Most pairs land at $16.25–18.50 (the Athens $8 + the Tomacco $8.25 = $16.25), but mind the top shelf: the $10–11 heavyweights can push a pair past the line.
Casa Nueva
Veggie Half Burritos — Two for $18
A worker-owned cooperative since 1985 — "Athens' living room" — with local sourcing, a full cantina, and live music. The under-$20 lane is vegetarian now: two half build-your-own burritos ($9 each) or two beans-and-rice To the Hills plates ($8 each) land at $16–18. Meat or chorizo adds $4 a burrito, and standard entrees for two run $24-plus — a two-taco plate each is $24 on its own. Closed Tuesday.
GoodFella's Pizza
Late-Night Slices for Two
Court Street's late-night slice since 1995 — big, fluffy, bakery-style square slices in cheese or pepperoni, served into the small hours (plus a second shop at 35 N Court St). The honest catch: GoodFella's publishes no menu anywhere it controls — no website, no ordering page — so the cheap-slice math rides on the counter board. The rumored two-slices-and-a-drink combo comes and goes; ask when you order.
Union Street Diner
Two Egg Breakfasts — $17.20
An old-school Athens diner where breakfast is "served all day everyday" — plus burgers, fried apps, omelettes, and deep-fried Oreos. The budget play is the egg plates: two 2-egg breakfasts with hashbrowns and toast run $17.20. Watch the extras — coffee is $3.75 (free refills) and breaks the twenty, and two sandwich-with-fries plates run $26–31. Open daily from 8am.
Miller's Chicken
Fried Chicken for Two — $18.50, Chicken Only
A family-owned Athens institution for 60-plus years, frying chicken to order with "picnic food" sides. Prices moved in 2026: the 5-piece is now $9.25, so two 5-pieces — or a shared 10-piece at $18.50 — fits with $1.50 to spare, and even one $2.25 side breaks the cap. The roomier lane: two spicy chicken sandwiches ($6.50 each) plus a pint of mashed potatoes ($5.25) at $18.25. Breakfast special $6.99 till 10am. Closed Sunday.
Brenen's Coffee Cafe
Coffee & Deli for Two
An OU-alumni-owned Court Street cafe of nearly 30 years — cold-brew and nitro on tap, Ohio-roasted coffee, made-in-house baked goods, plus a deli of paninis, sandwiches, soups, and salads. The catch: Brenen's publishes its menus with every price stripped out and its online ordering is switched off, so the under-$20 lunch claim can't currently be owner-verified — hence the pending badge.
Hot Box Chicken Fingers & Tots
Two Snack Boxes — $17
Court Street's late-night tender shop, opened November 2024 and frying until 3am Thursday–Saturday for the bar crowd. The Snack Box is a complete meal — 3 tenders, sauce, slaw, garlic toast, and fries or tots — for $8.50, so two boxes land at $17.00. Sammies run $7, and there's a plant-based "NOT BOX" at $13.50.
Kiser's BBQ
Two Chopped Pork Sandwiches + Pickles — $19.35
Eighteen-hour smoked chopped pork on a menu where nearly every sandwich is named for a Grateful Dead song — Althea, Shakedown Street, Fire on the Mountain. Two regular chopped pork BBQ sandwiches ($8.95 each) plus house-made pickles and pickled onions to share ($1.45) come to $19.35 off their own ordering menu. They bottle their own sauce line, too.
Jackie O's Brewery
Small Pizza + House Salad — $20.00 on the Line
Athens' brewing institution since 2005 — brewpub, taproom, bakeshop, and its own farm. The pizzas ride a spent-grain crust straight from the brewing process: a small Margherita ($14) plus a small house salad ($6) lands at $20.00 on the line, before tax, shared over 18 taps. Lighter graze: stuffed hush puppies plus 6 Mystic Wings, $18. The Public House dining room is temporarily closed — order at the Uptown brewpub next door.
Fluff Bakery & Catering
Breakfast for Two — $15 (Lunch Wraps: $18.50)
A Court Street scratch bakery since 2010 whose lunch menu takes a hard Thai turn — red and yellow curry rice bowls, Thai peanut wraps, and a vegan cilantro-peanut "pesto." Two bacon-egg-and-cheese sandwiches on house bagels or biscuits run $15.00; two chicken wraps at lunch, $18.50. Closed Mondays; food served until 3pm.
Village Bakery & Cafe
Two Wood-Fired Egg & Cheese Sandwiches — $18
Everything comes out of the wood-fired oven, and the sourcing is hyper-local — Shagbark Seed & Mill polenta, MoSo Farm smoked Canadian bacon, and a deep vegetarian/vegan bench including the "Veesh" vegan quiche. Two egg-and-cheese sandwiches on bagel, focaccia, or wood-fired bread run $18.00 (quiche swaps in at the same $9). Closed Sunday–Monday.
Bakery 323
Bakery Breakfast for Two — $17
An OU alum's bakery inside The Market on State: two hot coffees ($3.50 each), two cinnamon rolls ($2.25 each), and two banana muffins ($2.75 each) make a $17.00 bakery breakfast for two, with cupcakes at $2.89 if you'd rather go sweet. Runs its own local delivery for about $5.
Court Street Coffee
Two Paninis + Two Coffees — $14.90
Brews Columbus roaster Crimson Cup and stocks sandwiches made by Athens' own The Farmacy — now at three locations including one inside the Holzer Clinic. The math is friendly: paninis are $4.95 and a small house coffee $2.50, so lunch for two runs $14.90 with room for a $3 bagel and change.
Cutler's Restaurant & Bar
Breakfast for Two — $18 (OU Inn)
The Ohio University Inn's restaurant, where the chef sources from the Chesterhill Produce Auction and the Athens Farmers Market. The under-$20 window is breakfast: a breakfast sandwich ($11) plus oatmeal ($7) is $18.00 for two. Lunch and dinner realistically break the twenty — burgers are $17 flat and sandwiches $14.
The Side Bar
Two Grilled Cheeses — $20.00 on the Line
Opened July 2024 by a former personal chef in the old Zoe Fine Dining space, and deliberately built as an LGBTQ+-affirming "third space" — minors welcome, board games, charging outlets, and a deep non-alcoholic list. Two grilled cheeses off its own Toast menu land at $20.00 on the line, before tax; the beer-braised bratwurst ($12) breaks the pair. The menu changes seasonally, so check before you count on it.
Eclipse Company Store
Two Half-Pound Wing Baskets — $17.90
A 40-plus-tap beer hall and smokehouse inside the restored 1900s coal-company store that sits atop Eclipse Mine #4, original hardwood floors and all — ten minutes up the bike path in The Plains. Two half-pound baskets of smoked or boneless wings ($8.95 each, with celery and dressing) run $17.90; a chopped pork sandwich with chips plus a smoked-protein taco hits the same number.
Lucky's Pizza & Subs
14″ Deep Dish + Cheese Stix — $19
Albany's square deep-dish specialist, about ten minutes west of Athens — and the same family business runs Lucky's Indoor Golf, so the ordering site opens with a simulator-booking link. A 14-inch deep dish ($14.00) plus the locally famous Lucky's Stix ($5.00) feeds two for $19.00, or two 10-inch specialty pizzas run $18.
Larry's Dawg House
Two Footlong Combos — $18.20
An Athens institution since 1972: 6-inch combination dogs steamed and topped with the signature Larry's hotdog sauce, mustard, and onions ($3.25 — cheese or slaw versions $4), plus a full hand-dipped ice cream window with milkshakes ($4.30) and the Artic Swirl ($6.45). Two footlong combos with fries and a drink run $18.20; a cheeseburger ($5.30) and a dog ($3.25) each keeps two at $17.10.
Eating cheap in Athens: Almost everything is walkable on or just off Court Street, and a lot of it runs late — O'Betty's, Big Mamma's, and GoodFella's all serve into the small hours for the post-bar crowd, and GoodFella's "two slices and a drink for $5" is one of the best deals uptown. A few favorites keep daytime hours or close early in the week: Miller's Chicken and Bagel Street close by evening, Union Street Diner runs all-day breakfast, Casa Nueva is closed Tuesdays, and O'Betty's is closed Sunday and Monday.
