The Detroit-style original — Sterling Heights, Michigan, 1978, the chain that made the buttery, caramel-crusted square a national thing — is eight stores deep in Metro Nashville — five core-city plus Antioch and Hermitage — with a dozen more in the ring towns (Franklin, Murfreesboro, Hendersonville, Gallatin and company). Born at a Kona coffee-farm stand in 1989 and named for the donkeys that hauled coffee down the volcano slopes, the Hawaiian-coffee franchise is now about 40 stores strong, with the Nashville store in Midtown on 21st Ave S — Music Row and Vanderbilt walking distance.
