The street stand grew into a brick-and-mortar taquería in downtown Santa Ana. Tacos are $3.49 with handmade tortillas and guacamole included — four tacos for two runs about $15. One of OC's best-value taco stops.

The famed OC trompo-and-mesquite operation's Santa Ana location on 4th St. Regular tacos run about $4–5 now — two people on regular meats land around $18–20, while the arrachera and ribeye push well past. Card orders add a 3.9% fee.

A downtown Santa Ana favorite where the al pastor comes off a proper trompo — the taquero dabs the tortilla on the spit to catch the drippings before it hits the comal, then flicks down a piece of pineapple onto your taco. Carne asada and suadero round out a tight, focused menu. Watch the technique; it's part of the meal. Two eat for around $15.

A family-run food truck on South Broadway doing tacos estilo Guerrero — al pastor, carne asada and a standout suadero, with handmade tortillas if you ask. Get both salsas (the bright orange habanero and the green) and, if you're feeling it, the handmade choriqueso. Open Thursday through Sunday, evenings only. Two eat for around $15.

The Oaxacan corner of Santa Ana's taco map — a small, well-loved kitchen turning out the dishes of Oaxaca with handmade tortillas and proper salsas. A welcome change of pace from the al-pastor circuit, and easy on the wallet. Two eat for around $15.

Michoacán-Style Carnitas by the Pound
Named for the Michoacán city that takes carnitas seriously, this is the spot for slow-fried pork in all its forms — order by the pound with fresh tortillas, salsa and onions and build your own tacos at the table. Ask for surtido (mixed cuts) if you like a little of everything. Two eat for around $16.
Burritos La Palma
Zacatecano Birria Burritos · Bib Gourmand
A Jerez, Zacatecas family recipe that earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand — the birria de res burrito in a thin, handmade flour tortilla is the icon, stuffed with tender stewed beef and not much else, because it doesn't need it. Get a couple of the small ones with a side of consommé. Two eat for around $18.

A Rosarito-style mariscos kitchen on 17th St — smoked marlin tacos (about $5.75), aguachile, and loaded seafood tostadas. Two people sharing a couple of tacos and a tostada now land closer to $25 than $20, so order light to stay in budget.
El Gallo Giro
20-Year Panadería, Taquería & Tortas
A Bristol St Mexican food hall — bakery, taquería, juice bar, and torta counter in one. Tortas run $9–12 now, so two tortas with aguas frescas is $26–30; stick to tacos to keep a pair near $20.
El Toro Carnicería y Taquería
Tortillería + Taquería · Tamales & Champurrado
A carnicería and tortillería with a taquería attached, where the tortillas are pressed fresh and the tamales and champurrado are, by local consensus, some of the best in OC. Watching the counter work is half the fun, and the tacos and burritos are honest and cheap. Two eat for around $14.

The Santa Ana truck famous for the taco acorazado — a Morelos-style 'battleship' taco stacked on two tortillas with milanesa or chile relleno. Tacos run a few dollars each, so two people eat for around $18. Cash only; evenings.

A strip-mall Szechwan kitchen with serious mapo tofu and cumin lamb. Entrées now run $15–22, so the two-for-$20 window is really the noodle and lunch dishes — or plan on ~$30 for two full entrées.

A First St breakfast-and-Mexican cafe. Plates have climbed — breakfast burritos run about $17 — so look to the Value Meal menu to keep two people near $20; ordering off the main menu runs $25–35 for two.

Paletas & Mexican Ice Cream
The sweet stop to close out a taco crawl — house Mexican ice cream and paletas (frozen fruit bars) in flavors from strawberry and chocolate to mamey, guava and tamarind, plus snacks and aguas frescas. Two split treats for around $10.

Bad Ass Coffee of Hawaii
Breakfast Sandwiches on King’s Hawaiian — Two + a Drip Under $20
Born at a Kona coffee-farm stand in 1989 and named for the donkeys that hauled coffee down the volcano slopes, the Hawaiian-coffee franchise is now about 40 stores strong, and Orange County's store sits next door in Tustin on 17th Street, two miles east of downtown Santa Ana. The food play is the breakfast-sandwich board, served all day on King's Hawaiian sweet bread: bacon or sausage egg-and-cheddar, the Aloha (ham, egg, swiss, grilled pineapple, BBQ drizzle) and the Spam-stacked Bad Ass One. Across the three store menus we price-checked (Tolleson AZ, West Jordan UT, McKinney TX — August 2026), sandwiches run $6.77–$7.93 and a small drip of the Hawaiian blend $3.69–$4.49, so two sandwiches plus a shared drip lands at $17.23–$19.89 — under the line in every market we checked. The $7–9 flavored lattes are where the math breaks; stick to drip and it holds. Prices vary by store, so check yours.

Jacksonville's biggest food export reaches here too: founded in 1994 by two firefighter brothers, now 1,200+ stores — with one store in town at 2266 E. 17th St. The $5 Firehouse Snackers (BLT, Cordon Bleu, Sweet & Spicy Ham, Turkey Jalapeño half-subs) feed two for $10.75 all-in, and two small 4-inch Hook & Ladders run $12.78. The 8-inch mediums most people order run $10-plus — the only medium pair that stays near the line is the build-your-own ham or turkey. Priced on the chain's own ordering system at its Jacksonville San Marco store, July 2026 — prices vary by store, so confirm at yours.
