The Verdict: Yes — If You'll Eat Small or Split
Firehouse Subs was founded in Jacksonville, Florida in 1994 by Chris and Robin Sorensen — two brothers from a firefighting family — and it has since grown into a 1,200-store, 46-state operation owned by Restaurant Brands International. Big chains usually price their way out of our $20 line. Firehouse hasn't quite — it keeps a genuine value tier in the $5 Snackers — but the verdict comes with a condition worth saying plainly: under $20, nobody at the table is getting their own full-size sub.
In July 2026 we pulled the live menu at the chain's San Marco store in Jacksonville — the market where the whole thing started. Snackers (half-size subs: BLT, Cordon Bleu, Sweet & Spicy Ham, Turkey Jalapeño) were $5.00 each, putting two people at $10.75 with tax. The small Hook & Ladder — the chain's signature — was $6.39, and that's the 4-inch small, a light lunch. A second read on the chain's own menu at the Greeley, CO store put the full Hook & Ladder ladder at $6.79 small / $10.19 medium / $14.49 large — confirming the 8-inch mediums most people order run $10-plus (build-your-own ham or turkey are the exceptions), and opening the best real-meal play on the board: one 12-inch large, split.
| The Order | 2026 Price | For Two | Under $20? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Two $5 Snackers | $5.00 each | $10.75 all-in — a half-size toasted sub apiece, nine dollars of headroom | ✓ Comfortably |
| Two small (4-inch) Hook & Ladders | $6.39 each | $12.78 — the signature sub, twice, in the 4-inch size — a light meal with room for a shared drink | ✓ Comfortably |
| One 12-inch large Hook & Ladder, split two ways | $14.49 | A real six-inch meal each, with five-plus dollars left for drinks — Greeley, CO read | ✓ Comfortably |
| Snacker + small (4-inch) Hook & Ladder | $5.00 + $6.39 | About $11.39 — the mixed order for different appetites | ✓ Comfortably |
| Two 8-inch build-your-own mediums (ham or turkey) | varies by store | About $19.97 with tax at our read — the only mediums under $10; no chips, no drinks | ± Squeaks under — check your store |
| Two 8-inch mediums, most varieties — or any medium combo | combo tier | The medium Hook & Ladder combo read $14.38 at Greeley — a pair is $28.76; specialty mediums alone run $10-plus, so combos never fit | ✗ Over the line |
Counter service, no tip line — the sticker plus tax is the bill. And unlike most chains on our books, the cheap tier here isn't a loophole; Snackers are a permanent board, not a limited-time promo. But be clear-eyed about portions: everything under the line above is a half-size sub or a split. If you both want a full meal of your own — an 8-inch medium each, never mind combos — plan on breaking $20.
Three Ways Two People Stay Under $20
No coupons required — but notice what every one of these has in common: you're either eating small or splitting:
Two $5 Snackers
$10.75 all-in for two
The permanent value board: half-size subs on the same toasted roll — BLT, Cordon Bleu, Sweet & Spicy Ham or Turkey Jalapeño at our read. Two people eat for under eleven dollars with tax, which leaves room to add a third Snacker to split and still clear the line with change.
Any day, any timeTwo Small Hook & Ladders
$12.78 for two
The chain's signature — smoked turkey breast, Virginia honey ham and melted Monterey Jack, served "fully involved" with the works. Know the size: this is the 4-inch small at $6.39, a light meal. The 8-inch medium version runs $10-plus, and a pair of those breaks the budget on its own.
Any day · confirm your store's priceThe 8-Inch Loophole: Build-Your-Own Ham or Turkey
≈ $19.97 with tax
Want your own whole 8-inch medium? Almost every medium runs $10-plus — the Hook & Ladder medium read $10.19 at Greeley — but the build-your-own ham and build-your-own turkey sit under that — a pair squeaked in around $19.97 with tax at our read. It's the most bread-and-meat for the money, and also the order that breaks if your market runs a dollar hotter or anyone wants chips.
The only mediums that fit · no sidesSplit a 12-Inch Large Hook & Ladder
$14.49 for two
The answer to the 4-inch asterisk: the large Hook & Ladder is a full 12 inches — smoked turkey, honey ham and melted Monterey Jack — and $14.49 on the chain's own menu at our Greeley, CO read. Split it and each of you gets a genuine 6-inch sub for about $7.25, with enough room left for two drinks and still change from a twenty.

Firehouse Rewards — and the Pickle Buckets
Firehouse Rewards, the chain's free app program, earns points on every dollar toward free subs and usually carries a signup and birthday offer — the only standing discount channel, since the ordering flow has no promo-code field for coupon-site codes. The better-known giveback runs the other direction: the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation, founded in 2005 after the Sorensen brothers ran relief meals into Hurricane Katrina's aftermath, is funded partly by register round-ups and the famous $3 leftover pickle buckets, and has granted tens of millions of dollars of life-saving equipment to first responders.
Prices You'll See Online That Aren't Real
Firehouse is big enough to attract the recycled-menu-price sites. What to ignore:
Stale math from years ago. At our July 2026 read, 8-inch mediums ran $10-plus apiece — only the build-your-own ham or turkey pair landed under twenty, at $19.97 with tax, with nothing on the side. Add chips and drinks and any pair of medium combos is comfortably past twenty. The under-$20 tier is Snackers and the 4-inch smalls, not combos.
The Snackers board was $5.00 flat at the store we read, and Firehouse sets prices store by store — scraped "Firehouse menu with prices" sites are recycling old numbers with fresh date stamps. The only real menu is the one your own store shows in the chain's app or ordering site.
There's no promo-code field in the chain's ordering flow for these to go in. The discount channel that exists is Firehouse Rewards points. Everything else on the coupon aggregators is noise.
This page was checked in July 2026 against the chain's own ordering system and gets re-checked when the Snackers board moves — if it creeps past $5, the comfortable verdict narrows, and we'll say so here.

Verified absences worth knowing: the chain's locator shows no in-city stores in New York City, Chicago, Boston, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., Seattle, San Francisco, Portland, Detroit, Minneapolis–St. Paul or Cleveland — if a listicle promises you one there, it's pointing at a suburb. Canada note: Toronto (12 stores), Calgary (10) and Vancouver (2) are real on the chain's Canadian locator, but we haven't verified Canadian-dollar pricing yet, so those pages don't carry the card.
