💡 How to eat cheap here: Gainesville's published cheap-eats lists are unusually unreliable — several of the most-cited spots have been closed for years, and the prices quoted for the survivors are often half what the restaurant actually charges now. So check the counter, not the listicle. Three habits do the work: order at lunch (Gator China's $8.79 special includes fried rice and a soda; Piesanos and Peppino's both do two slices and a drink for under $10), learn the weekday deals (Boca Fiesta's Taco Tuesday is 2 for $6, Bingo Deli's Tuesday is two dogs for $13, Peppino's Tuesday large pie is $10.99), and treat 34th Street and Archer Road as the default — twelve of these cards sit on that one corridor. The sushi, ramen and pho tier is the exception: it prices entrées at $15–18, so two rarely clears $20.

El Indio Mexican Restaurant
Two Bean Burritos · $10.18 for two
The cheapest two-person meal we found anywhere in Gainesville. Bean burritos are $5.09 on El Indio's own Toast menu, so two come to $10.18 — and the ceiling is barely higher: a beef burrito is $7.49, a bean bowl $5.49, a three-taco bundle $8.99. Fast-casual Mexican since 1992, with a second store on NW 34th Blvd at the same prices. Breakfast is served 9–11am at the 13th Street location.
The Spot
Two Omelettes · $11.90 for two
A Midtown counter that most cheap-eats lists describe wrongly — it is a Greek and Mediterranean gyro shop, not a build-your-own-bowl place, and it takes cards. American cheese omelettes are $5.95 each, so two are $11.90. The better order for two is a classic gyro at $8.95 plus a chicken quesadilla at $7.95 = $16.90. Bagel with cream cheese $4.95, bacon-egg-and-cheese bagel $6.95.
Flaco's
Cuban + Bean Burrito · $16.86 · Open till 2:30am
The late-night answer, and the closing time is confirmed off the owner's own page rather than a listicle: 2:30am, Tuesday through Saturday. Pan con lechon is $8.88 and a bean burrito $5.98, so two eat for $14.86 — add two Cuban coffees at $1.00 each and it is $16.86. Tacos run $2.80–$3.27, arepas $5.14–$6.45, a full Cuban sandwich $9.95. Their own page lists Friday as closed, which reads like stale data on an otherwise late-night-every-night schedule — worth a call.
Adam's Rib Co
Two Pork Sandwiches + Fries · $16.50 for two
Chopped pork on garlic toast is $6.50, so two sandwiches plus a $3.50 order of seasoned fries lands at $16.50. The rest of the board stays honest: chopped chicken sandwich $8.00, brisket or turkey $9.00, a quarter chicken $6.00, a single rib $4.00. Two sandwiches plus two fries hits exactly $20.00, so keep it to one order of fries. Sides — mac, collards, slaw — are $6.50. Closed Sundays.
Bowie Pizza
Two Whole Pizzas · $18.80 for two
One of the few places in town where $20 buys two people an entire pizza each rather than a shared one. A classic mozzarella cheese pizza is $8.90 and a pepperoni $9.90, so two whole pies come to $18.80. Cheaper still: one cheese pizza plus two fountain drinks at $2.75 each is $14.40. Involtini — rolled pepperoni or pesto — are $7.00. Priced off their Slice menu; they also run a Toast storefront.
Grill Express
Falafel + Lentil Soup + Drink · $18.47 for two
Halal counter across from campus. Five pieces of falafel are $7.99 and a lentil soup $7.99, so two eat for $15.98 — add a drink at $2.49 and it is $18.47. Hummus with pita and Greek feta fries are also $7.99. Be aware the sandwiches start at $12.99, so two of those will not clear the line; the appetiser-and-soup route is the one that works here.

Off-Tuesday the menu still works: Walker family potato salad $6 plus white bean hummus with toast $9 is $15.00. Chef-owned, in the South Main Station building. Closed Mondays.
Curia on the Drag
Two Quesadillas · $13.00 for two
An all-vegan food truck parked in an outdoor coffee-and-bar garden, and one of the cheapest full meals downtown. Plain quesadillas are $6.50, so two are $13.00. Two tacos of any protein are $9.75, a black bean and cilantro rice burrito $9.50, a tempeh reuben or patty melt $9.75, a Beyond burger $10.50. Sides — seasoned tots, mac, cilantro rice and beans — are $4.75. Note the food truck runs Wed–Mon and is closed Tuesdays, a narrower window than the coffee shop.

Five wings are $7.00, so two orders feed two for $14.00. Step up and it still works: five wings with a side is $10.00, three tenders with a side $10.00, so one of each is $17.00. Beyond that it tightens — two of the $10.00 plates lands exactly on $20.00. Seafood rice $9.00, a single tender $2.00, cornbread $2.00. Availability is intermittent and their ordering page regularly shows items out of stock, so call ahead.
Germain's Chicken Sandwiches
Brussel Caesar + Ranch Fries · $15.00 for two
Chef-crafted fried chicken sandwiches, and an honest warning: two sandwiches will not clear $20 — the Classic is $14.00 and the specialty birds $15.00, so a pair is $28.00. What does work is sharing. A brussel caesar salad at $10.00 plus ranch fries at $5.00 is $15.00 for two, and What The Flock — all-white-meat tenders with ranch fries at $12.00 — plus fries is $17.00. Chicken birria eggrolls $12.00, eight big wings $14.00.
Humble Wood Fire Bagel Shop
Two Egg & Cheese Bagels · $15.00 for two
Sourdough bagels at the 4th Ave Food Park. Egg and cheese starts at $7.50, so two are $15.00 — as is a pizza bagel plus an egg and cheese, or two everything bagels at $3.75 with a nut butter and jelly. Plain bagels $3.50, BLT or avocado toast $9.50, nova lox $16.00. List the bagel shop, not the pizzeria — the separate Humble Wood Fire pizzeria on South Main runs a brunch menu where the cheapest two-person build is exactly $20.00 before tax.
Mac's Drive Thru
Two Burgers + Fries · $15.97 for two
A drive-thru burger window that has been on NW 10th Avenue since 1987. Burgers are $6.49 and fries $2.99, so two burgers and a shared order of fries is $15.97. Grilled cheese is $3.25, a BLT, fish or chicken sandwich $6.49, a ham sandwich $5.99. The rock-bottom build — two grilled cheese and two fries — is $12.48. Worth knowing: their own website publishes no prices at all, so these come off their Toast ordering menu. Closed Sundays.
Sweet Berries Eatery
Tuna Sandwich + Small Salad · $16.30 for two
Lunch and frozen custard, not breakfast — they open at 11. A Cape Cod tuna sandwich is $10.20 and a small garden salad $6.10, so two eat for $16.30; two small garden salads with drinks is $18.18. The custard counter is the cheap end: a one-scoop cup or cone is $3.99, so dessert for two is $7.98. Concretes $5.75–$6.75, shakes $6.50, sundaes from $6.75. Their UF Newell Hall location closed in 2025 — this is the remaining store.

Two Half Toasts + Coffee · $17.00 for two
A minimalist brunch room that sells its toasts in halves, which is what makes it work for two. Half avocado toast and half whipped feta toast are $7 each, so two plus a $3 drip coffee is $17.00. House-made yogurt $7, biscuits with house jam $5, a blueberry scone $4, a chocolate chip cookie $3. Full toasts are $13 and the classic breakfast $14, so stay on the half side. Walk-ins only, and closed Tuesday and Wednesday.
Muñeca's Taco Garden

A taco garden at the 4th Ave Food Park. Two-taco plates are $9.00, so two of them is $18.00 — or one plate plus a bean and rice burrito, also $9.00, for the same total. Single tacos are $5.00 pork or chicken, $6.00 beef. A cheese quesadilla, bean and rice bowl or cheese nachos are $10.00, chips and salsa fresca $5.00. Tight but real: at $18.00 there is under two dollars of headroom, so any add-on breaks it. Pickup only.

Downtown pan-Asian where the small plates, not the entrées, are the route under $20. Four Buddha rolls are $6.95, spicy edamame $7.95 and a miso soup $4.00 — $18.90 for two sharing. A house salad is $4.95, plain edamame $6.95, crispy sesame croquettes $7.95, garlic eggplant $8.95. Entrées and sushi rolls run $11–$18 apiece, so two of those is over; treat this as a shared-plates stop.
Five Star Pizza
12" Cheese + Garlic Rolls · $16.98 for two
Three Gainesville stores, identical pricing, and open absurdly late — the downtown store runs to 3:30am daily. A 12-inch cheese pizza is $10.99 and eight garlic rolls $5.99, so two eat for $16.98. A 16-inch cheese is $14.99, an 18-inch $16.99. The Tower Road store adds an 18" XL two-topping at $19.99 that feeds two on its own. Note they sell no slices — these are whole-pie stores.

The long value corridor. Archer Road and SW 34th Street carry more sub-$20 kitchens than the rest of the city combined — Cuban, Peruvian rotisserie, barbecue, two Chinese lunch counters and three pizzerias.
G'ville Seafood N' Chicken

Fried seafood and chicken where both plates come with fries. Wings are $7.00 and a gizzard or chicken-liver dinner $8.00, so two eat for $15.00 with sides included. Fish baskets — catfish, tilapia, whiting, flounder — are $9.50, a shrimp basket $10.00, a pound of catfish nuggets $10.00. The three lunch specials at $12.00 each are good value individually but $24.00 for two, so order off the dinners board. Card payments carry a disclosed 3% surcharge — cash is cheaper here.

A barbecue truck on Archer Road with a genuinely cheap sandwich board. Pulled pork is $8, so two are $16.00; pork plus a fried pork chop or grouper sandwich at $10 is $18.00. Chicken or Philly cheesesteak $12, rib sandwich $15, brisket $18. Sides — mac, collards, potato salad, beans and rice — start at $5 small. Dinners with two sides run $17–$22, so the sandwiches are the line. Haitian griot is on the board at $22 if you want the house speciality.
Mi Apá Latin Café
Cuban + Black Bean Soup · $16.00 for two
Counter-service and drive-thru Cuban on 34th Street. A Cuban sandwich is $11.00 and comes with plantain chips; add a $5.00 bowl of black bean soup and two eat for $16.00. A frita — beef, pork and chorizo patty with potato sticks — is $10.00, roast pork or grilled chicken sandwiches $11.00. Bowls are the other route: a Cuban salad bowl with plantains, rice and beans is $9.50, so two is $19.00. Ham croquettes $1.50, stuffed potatoes $3.00, cafecito territory.

A drive-thru coffee hut on Tower Road that quietly does one of the better cheap breakfasts for two. Bacon, sausage, ham or plain egg-and-cheese sandwiches are all $5.15, and a small house coffee is $2.85 — so two full breakfasts with coffee is $16.00. Even upgrading both to lattes at $4.45 keeps it at $19.20. Bagels $3.85, a croissant $2.00, egg bites $5.15, a blueberry muffin or apple fritter $4.15. Opens at 6am.
I Love NY Pizza

A whole cheese pizza is $11.99. Add garlic knots at $2.00 and two sodas at $1.25 each and two people eat for $16.49 — or swap the knots for $5.00 french fries and it is $18.24. A garden salad is $6.99, a pepperoni roll $2.25. Straightforward New York-style value on the far southwest side, priced off their Slice menu.

The best-value lunch in the city on a like-for-like basis. The L-series lunch specials are $8.79 and include roast pork fried rice AND a canned soda — general Tso's, sesame chicken, chicken with broccoli, kung pao, moo goo gai pan, sweet and sour. Two of them is $17.58, drinks in. Beef dishes are $9.59. Strictly Mon–Sat 11am–3pm; after 3pm the cheapest two-person build is two combination platters at $21.58, which is over.
Los Pollos Rotisserie & Grill

Peruvian rotisserie. A quarter chicken with two sides is $9.63 and papa a la huancaina $8.45, so two eat for $18.08. Two quarter-chicken plates is $19.26, which clears pre-tax but not after. A student late-night institution. An Awesome Gumby's create-your-own pizza is $13.59 and cans of soda $2.39, so two eat for $18.37. Lunch specials 11am–5pm — an 8" sub or a 12" two-topping pizza — are $12.79. Read the caveat: every one of those figures is the discounted online-order price under a 20%-off promo. At full price the same pizza is $16.99 and the build becomes $22.97. Verify the promo is live before you count on it.
Peach Valley Cafe

A breakfast-and-lunch room where exactly one build fits. The egg breakfast is $9.29 and comes with potatoes or grits plus a biscuit, muffin or toast, so two is $18.58 — $19.88 once Alachua's 7% tax lands. Bare omelets are $8.99, $17.98 for two. That is the whole window: a single coffee breaks it, and anything from the omelet-with-sides tier at $11.59 doubles to $23.18. Order the two egg breakfasts and drink water.

The whole L1–L39 lunch range is a flat $7.99 — general Tso's, sesame chicken, chicken with broccoli, the lot. Two lunches plus two roast pork egg rolls at $1.79 each comes to $19.56. Wonton or egg drop soup is $2.59, plain fried rice $3.89. Swapping the egg rolls for two soups pushes it to $21.16, so take the egg rolls. Residential northwest, where the bakeries are. The NW 16th Boulevard strip alone holds a bagel bakery, a European patisserie and a frozen-custard counter within one block of each other.
D'Lites Emporium

The cheapest card on the page, and dessert rather than dinner. Small cups of low-calorie soft-serve are $4.25, so two is $8.50; two milkshakes is $12.50 and two medium sundaes $15.28. Cones $3.56–$6.62, a single affogato $6.25, floats $7.05, three scoops of toppings $1.13. They also do sandwiches at $8.95 and ultimate bowls at $9.19. Opens at noon — this is an after-dinner stop, not a breakfast one.
The Bagel Bakery

Best straight value of any breakfast on the page. A bagel with plain cream cheese is $3.79 and a hot coffee $2.59, so two of each is $12.76. Two egg bagels at $5.99 with two coffees is $17.16. A European-style patisserie one door down from The Bagel Bakery. Two petit croissants at $3.50 with two drip coffees at $2.95 is $12.90; upgrade to full croissants au beurre at $4.75 and it is $15.40. A vanilla bean scone is $4.75, a brown butter chocolate chip cookie $4.95, a butter roll $1.25, the daily vegetarian quiche $9.95. Note their domain: the Gainesville bakery is uppercrustgnv.com — uppercrustbakery.com is an unrelated Austin, Texas bakery.
Caribbean Spice
Two Patties + Coco Bread · $14.40 for two
Family-owned Jamaican since 1983, and the best Caribbean value in town now that Reggae Shack has closed. Beef, veggie or spinach patties are $3.95 and coco bread $3.25, so two of each is $14.40 — with room for two Pepsis at $1.30 to land at $17.00 all in. Otherwise split a medium jerk chicken at $13.95 plus a patty for $17.90, or take two patty specials at $9.25. Curry chicken or brown stew $14.95, curry goat or jerk pork $15.95, oxtail $20.95.
Peppino's Pizza
Tuesday Large Cheese + 2 Sodas · $14.97 for two
Two ways in. Tuesday is a large cheese pizza pick-up special at $10.99 — add two sodas at $1.99 and two eat for $14.97. Any day, the lunch combo of two cheese slices with a drink is $6.99, so two combos plus $4.50 garlic knots is $18.48 with drinks included. Single cheese slices are $3.00, french fries $4.00. On the West University stretch, priced off their Slice menu.
43rd Street Deli & Breakfast House
Two BLTs, Breakfast All Day · $15.98 for two
A classic diner where breakfast is served all day, every day — which matters, because the breakfast board clears $20 and the lunch board does not. Two BLTs at $7.99 is $15.98; two two-stack buttermilk pancakes at $7.79 is $15.58; a BLT plus biscuits and gravy at $8.99 is $16.98. Lunch fails: the cheapest two items are a $9.99 salad and a $12.99 BLT, $22.98 together. Of the three original locations only NW 25th Place survives; two closed in 2025.

One of the very few Gainesville restaurants that publishes prices right on its own homepage — no click-through, no ordering platform. Street tacos are $3.25 each, so six between two people is $19.50, three apiece. Asada, al pastor and the rest are all at the same price. Burritos are $10.99, which makes two of those $21.98 and just over, so the taco build is the card here.

The most famous restaurant in Gainesville — a folk-art pizzeria with a VW bus you can eat inside, a greenhouse dining room and its own soda line. Cheese slices are $4.50 and the homemade cane-sugar sodas $3.00 with free refills, so two of each is $15.00. Worth knowing: the everyday 11am–4pm lunch special of a salad and a one-topping slice is $10, which makes two of them exactly $20.00 — not under. The slices build is the card. Terrell's Bar-B-Que

A Waldo Road barbecue counter with a narrow but real window. A pork or beef sandwich is $10.95 and a regular side $5.00 — $15.95 shared. Two sandwiches will not work: at $21.90 that is over before tax, and adding two cans at $1.50 to the shared build takes it to $18.95 and $20.28 taxed. Dinners include two sides: pork or beef $14.00, chicken $15.65, ribs $17.25. Their own site and their own menu image disagree on closing time — call first.

Only one of them publishes a priced two-person deal on its own site, so only one is carded. The rest gate pricing behind a store-selected ordering flow we will not guess at.
