A Bakersfield institution since the early 2000s (and pura comida auténtica for 30-plus years) on E Truxtun — carne asada tacos and burritos, refried beans, and a salsa bar where the green salsa loaded on the beans is the move. Great prices and the first thing a lot of locals eat when they come home. Two eat for around $14. Open daily.

A Fruitvale food truck many call the best tacos in Bakersfield, with a cute covered patio to dine in — soft, lightly-crisp tortillas, a great ceviche tostada, a packed chorizo breakfast burrito, and agua de pepino to wash it down. Two falafel wraps run $19.00 on their live ordering menu, and a falafel-plus-chicken-shawarma pair lands at $20.00 on the line. Plates with three sides are $15.50. Heads up: the printed menu on their brand site shows older, lower prices — the ordering site is current.

Downtown dim sum with a lineage: owner Jia Wen Wang is the son of the original head chef of Great Castle on Union Avenue, and the potstickers use the same family recipe Bakersfield has eaten for 47 years. The menu prices in $5 steps, so a two-person spread hits $20.00 exactly, before tax — potstickers (8 for $15) plus Hong Kong egg tarts (2 for $5), or har gow ($10) plus shu mai ($10). Left the farmers market in 2025 to expand the G Street dine-in.

CPK — the chain that invented the BBQ chicken pizza in 1985 — prices like the sit-down restaurant it is: two people each ordering a main start at $33.58. The honest under-$20 route is to split. Every pizza is a 6-slice thin crust, and the cheapest, the Margherita, reads $17.69 at the 10150 Stockdale Hwy store on CPK's own online ordering, August 2026 — $8.85 a head when two people share one. The Traditional Cheese is $18.69 and the Mac 'N' Cheese, the cheapest main plate at $16.79, splits the same way. With actual kids along the math turns kind: every CPKids pizza and pasta entrée is $8.49. The traps are ordering like two separate customers and the specialty list — pizzas beyond the basic three start at $19.69, and drinks push even a split pizza to the line, so it's a water-and-share play. CPK runs exactly three price tiers nationally — $16.69 to $18.69 for the same Margherita — so confirm at yours; the dine-in menu can read slightly different from the ordering site.

Prices from our July 2026 read of the chain's own menu: the à la carte chicken quesadilla is $7.99 — two for $15.98 — and the just-cheese quesadilla is $2.49, while fire-grilled chicken combos push close to the line, so quesadillas are the sure two-under-$20 play. The $5 Firehouse Snackers (BLT, Cordon Bleu, Sweet & Spicy Ham, Turkey Jalapeño half-subs) feed two for $10.75 all-in, and two small 4-inch Hook & Ladders run $12.78. The 8-inch mediums most people order run $10-plus — the only medium pair that stays near the line is the build-your-own ham or turkey.
