Best Cheap Eats in Wichita
Two People, Under $20

🌾 Wichita, KS  ·  31 deals  ·  Updated August 9, 2026

Wichita is one of the cheapest cities in America for two people to eat well, and this page was rebuilt from scratch in August 2026 to prove it with numbers instead of adjectives: 24 of 31 cards were priced off a menu the restaurant itself publishes, and the 7 that were not say so on the card and name what to check. The floor is genuinely low — a cheeseburger is $4.00 on South Oliver, two mini bean burritos at a North Broadway cafe open since 1963 are $11.90, two barbecue sandwiches are $12.00, two cheese slices off a 26-inch pie in Delano are $12.50, and six street tacos on North Broadway are $16.50. Organised by neighborhood — downtown and Old Town, Delano, North Broadway, east Wichita, south and Hillside, and the west side.

💡 How to eat cheap here: Wichita has two habits worth learning. The first is the lunch window — China Town on North Hillside runs $7.95 lunch plates, Chiang Mai Thai a flat $9.50 lunch menu, and Hong Kong Express $8.25 specials, and in every case the same food after the window costs a couple of dollars more. The second is North Broadway, which is the cheapest ladder in the city and the one visitors never find: Connie's Mexico Cafe puts two people at $11.90 on mini bean burritos and El Chapulin sells street tacos at $2.75, so six between two is $16.50. After that it is the burger stands — a cheeseburger is $4.00 at Southeast Carryout and $5.99 at Burger Central — and the slice shops, where Picasso's cheese slice is $6.25 and Bronx's red slice $6.50.

Cards marked ✓ VERIFIED were read off a source the restaurant controls — its own site, its own menu file or its own ordering page. Cards marked ⚠ PRICE CHECK PENDING are places we believe belong here but whose owner price we could not confirm; each one says exactly what to go check.

🏙️ Downtown, Douglas Avenue & Old Town · 3 spots

The Douglas Avenue spine and the brick blocks of Old Town — a scratch diner with a national reputation for cinnamon rolls, a 1932 soda fountain still mixing phosphates at a marble counter, and street tacos a block off the river.

Doo-Dah Diner

Waffle + French Toast  ·  $16.00 for two

The scratch diner on Kellogg with a national reputation, and the breakfast half of the menu is where two people eat: a waffle is $8.00 and the “normal” French toast $8.00, so a plate each is $16.00 — and pancakes start at $5.00, which puts two at $10.00. Biscuits and gravy are $8.00, an oatmeal cup $6.00, and sides (fries, hash browns, mashed potatoes, green beans) are $3.00 each. Skip the sandwich page: the cheeseburger is $15.00 and the French dip $18.00, so two of those miss badly. Priced off Doo-Dah's own menu.

Rio Grill & Cantina

Four tacos  ·  $15.20 for two

A block off the river on West Central, and the à la carte column is the whole trick: a taco is $3.80 and a street taco $4.50, so four between two is $15.20 and you can still add chips at $4.00. Two burritos are $18.50, a bean burrito on its own $7.50, a pork tamale $5.50 and a chile relleno $6.50 — mix any two of those and you are nowhere near the line. The bound entrée plates are where it gets expensive, so order off the à la carte side. Priced off Rio Grill's own ordering menu.

Old Mill Tasty Shop

Soda-fountain lunch  ·  price unconfirmed

Step through the door at 604 E Douglas and it is 1932 — a working marble soda fountain mixing cherry cokes and phosphates the original way, with sandwiches, soups and a locally famous green chili alongside. It is one of the genuine reasons to eat downtown. The badge is amber on sourcing and nothing else: the shop runs no ordering platform and no site that answers, so no owner price exists to read. Ask what a sandwich-and-soup runs, or read the board at the counter. Open Mon–Sat 11am–3pm, closed Sundays.

Picasso's Pizzeria

Two cheese slices  ·  $12.50

Home of the 26-inch pie, and the slices come off it accordingly — one is a meal. A cheese slice is $6.25, so two people eat for $12.50; pepperoni is $7.50 each ($15.00 for two); and the Margherita, Cubist, Woodstock, Great White and Big Island are all $8.50, which puts a slice each at $17.00. Between 11 and 2 the lunch special is a single-topping slice with a garlic knot or a breadstick for $8.75 — $17.50 for two, fed. The loaded “Slices of Art” at $10.75 are the only ones that break the line. TJ's Burger House

Two cheeseburgers  ·  about $21.00 — just over

An old-school Wichita burger house with griddle-smashed classics worth the trip. The honest math is that it probably misses: cheeseburgers run about $10.50, which puts two people around $21.00 — over the line, not under it. That figure is an approximation rather than an owner-menu price, which is why the badge is amber rather than the card being cut. TJ's own site answers but publishes no menu we could read. If the burger is under $10.00 it clears; that is the number to check.

Ruben's Mexican Grill

Family Mexican  ·  price unconfirmed

A laid-back, family-owned room in the historic Delano District with a crowd-pleasing menu, cold margaritas and a kitchen happy to take special requests. Sharing a couple of plates is the play for two. It is on this page as a place we believe belongs, not as a priced build — Ruben's runs no ordering platform and publishes no prices we could read, so ask before you count on it. If you want a Delano number you can trust tonight, Picasso's is two doors of history away.

🛤️ North Broadway & North Wichita · 3 spots

The most under-rated eating corridor in the city and the cheapest ladder on this page — a Mexican cafe that has been on North Broadway since 1963, street tacos under $3, and the sandwich bar that doubles as Kansas's best folk room.

Connie's Mexico Cafe

Two mini bean burritos  ·  $11.90

On North Broadway since 1963 and still the cheapest sit-down meal in this guide. The mini burritos are the whole story: refried bean or whole bean $5.95, chicken $8.25, ground beef $7.95, all-meat $8.95 — so two people eat from $11.90 and top out around $17.90. À la carte is just as kind: a taco is $3.65 (four for $14.60), a tamale $2.95, a soft grilled-chicken taco $4.25. The Monterreys at $12.25 and the enchilada plate at $13.95 are where two people cross the line. Priced off Connie's own ordering menu.

El Chapulin

Six street tacos  ·  $16.50

Further up North Broadway, and the cheapest taco on this page: $2.75 for carne asada, al pastor, barbacoa, pork steak or longaniza, $3.00 for birria, buche or tripitas. Six between two is $16.50 and seven is $19.25, still under. Breakfast is the other move — biscuits and gravy $6.50, French toast $6.00, a small jumbo burrito $8.50, and the huevos rancheros and chilaquiles are $12.00 each, which is the plate that pushes a pair over. Tortas at $10.50 land two people at $21.00, so stick to tacos. Priced off El Chapulin's own ordering menu.

The Artichoke Sandwichbar

The Famous No. 8  ·  price unconfirmed

An Irish sandwich bar that has been at 811 N Broadway since 1984 and doubles as one of the best folk, bluegrass and Celtic music rooms in Kansas — restaurant by day, band room by night. The order is the Famous No. 8, the city's most-ordered sandwich, ideally with a beer while the band sets up. The Artichoke does publish an owner menu, on its own Toast ordering page, and Toast is the one platform this site cannot read from — hence the amber badge. Hog Wild Pit Bar-B-Q

Two BBQ sandwiches  ·  $12.00

Kansas City-style barbecue with six Wichita stores, and the sandwich board is where two people eat properly: a regular sandwich is $6.00, so two are $12.00 — add two sides at $3.00 each (curly fries, slaw, potato salad, beans, mac and cheese, mashed potatoes) and a full plate apiece is $18.00. Large sandwiches are $9.00, the Wild Hog $9.00, and there is a $5.99 Meal Deal, which is $11.98 for a pair. The dinners start at $13.00 and a half slab is $14.50, so those are for one person or a bigger budget. Priced off Hog Wild's own East Central ordering menu.

The croissant versions are cheaper still at $8.25 each ($16.50 for two). Egg rolls are $6.45 for four, crab rangoons $5.45, and the Korean corn dogs run $5.25–$7.25 if you want a snack instead.
