Dinker’s Bar and Grill
Omaha’s Famous Haystack Burger
A 1965 dive in old Sheely Town that locals — and Midwest Living — call the best burger in Omaha. The famous Haystack stacks sirloin with American cheese, smoked ham and a fried egg; the over-a-pound Triple Decker is the showstopper. Burgers come with chips and a pickle and stay genuinely cheap, so two eat for under $20. Cash only, plenty of TVs.
Taqueria Tijuana
$2 Taco Tuesdays — Six for $12
A hole-in-the-wall on South 24th that South-O locals name without hesitation, with handmade tortillas and juicy asada and adobada. Tacos drop to $2 on Tuesdays (table service), tortas and burritos are $5.95, and a bowl of the spicy beef stew is $7 — so two people eat for $12–16. Closed Wednesdays; come hungry.
Zio’s Pizzeria
New York Slices to Share — ~$18 for Two
An Omaha institution since 1985 hand-stretching New York-style pies in old-world ovens, and one of the few spots in town selling pizza by the slice. The slices are big — two people grab a couple each plus a side salad and a drink for around $18. The Old Market location has the most character; there are several across town.
Orsi’s Italian Bakery & Pizzeria
Little Italy Sheet Pizza Since 1919
A century-old bakery, deli and pizzeria in Omaha’s Little Italy, where the smell of sauce hits you at the door. The square sheet pizza is the move — a smaller order plus their cheesy garlic bread runs two people around $18–20, with a cannoli for the road. Mostly carry-out; grab fresh bread and Italian groceries while you wait.
Runza
The Nebraska Original — Combo Under $10
You can’t do Omaha on a budget without a Runza: a baked bread pocket stuffed with seasoned beef, cabbage and onion, born in Lincoln in 1949 and found only around these parts. A Runza-sandwich combo with crinkle fries and a drink runs single digits, so two people get the full Nebraska experience for under $20. Add onion rings; you won’t regret it.
El Basha Grill
Mediterranean Plates — Most Under $10
A family-run Lebanese spot near 72nd & Pacific doing shawarma, falafel and kabobs since before Omaha knew what hummus was. Most entrées land under $10, so two people each get their own shawarma platter (and a shared hummus or mezza) for right around $20. Order at the counter; grab a patio table.
La Casa Pizzaria
Iconic Sicilian Pie Since 1953
Omaha’s oldest pizzeria (since 1953) and a genuine city landmark, neon Peppi sign and all. The signature is a thin, flaky, almost biscuit-crust rectangular pie with Romano and crumbled-hamburger. Two people split a small pie plus the cheese bread for around $20 — order ahead, it’s made from scratch and worth the wait.
Bronco’s Hamburgers
The Big Bronco Burger — Two for ~$18
Omaha’s first locally-owned fast-food spot, flipping fresh never-frozen Nebraska beef since 1959, with fries cut daily from whole potatoes. The Big Bronco Burger exists nowhere else on earth, and two people get burgers and fries for around $18. Drive-through classic Americana; a few locations around town.
Three Happiness Express
Family Chinese — Portions Built for Two
A small, family-run Leavenworth-corridor Chinese spot with a wall of Best-of-Omaha awards and generous portions. Sesame chicken, kung pao and lo mein come fast, fresh and reasonably priced — two people each get their own entrée plus crab rangoon for well under $20. Mostly takeout; worth the trip.
Don & Millie’s
Combo Meals from $5.59 — Two for ~$14
An employee-owned Omaha drive-thru institution famous for the Cheese Frenchee (a deep-fried cheese sandwich), footlong chili dogs and 99¢ shakes. Express Value Combos — a burger or sandwich with fries and a drink — start at $5.59, so two people each get a full combo for around $14, shakes included. Margaritas at the counter, because Omaha.
Pho 79
Banh Mi & Pho on 114th
A west-Omaha pho shop (4.6 stars) where regulars swear the broth is the best in the city and the portions leave leftovers. The banh mi baguettes are the budget move — two sandwiches plus the fresh spring rolls ($7.49) land right around $20, and each person gets their own. Big bowls of pho too if you’d rather splurge. Lunch and dinner, with some midday breaks, so check hours.
California Tacos & More
Omaha’s Original Puffy “Cali Taco”
An Omaha original and a Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives pick: housemade fried, puffy taco shells stuffed full of meat, lettuce and cheese, finished at a loaded condiment bar. The puffy tacos are cheap and made to order, so two people build a plateful for around $15–18. A only-in-Omaha twist on the taco.
