1 lb Burger Trail

Three rules, and they're not complicated.

1. A full pound of beef. One patty or six, stacked or single — we don't care how it gets there, as long as it's sixteen ounces of cow in one sandwich.

2. The restaurant has to say so itself. Every stop below was read on the restaurant's own menu — their site, their PDF, their ordering page. No aggregator prices, no "someone on the internet said." It's the same rule we use for every deal on this site, and it's why this list is 21 stops instead of 200.

3. Splitting counts. This is a 2-for-$20 site. A pound of beef is comfortably two dinners, and at most of these stops two people can share one and walk out under twenty bucks. Finishing one solo is a personal decision and we support you either way.

The Newport Cafe — Newport, Oregon — $9. This is the crown jewel and we'd drive past four states for it. The Newport Cafe doesn't have a pound burger. Their burger menu is printed "all 1 lb, hand-pressed," full stop. The Classic is nine dollars. Cheese makes it ten. They're open 7am to 10pm, 365 days a year, on the Oregon coast. And if a single pound feels like a warm-up, the same menu offers a 3 lb Monster ($18), a 4 lb Ultimate ($25), and an 8 lb Super Ultimate ($60) that arrives with eight fried eggs on a ten-inch bun. Start the trail here. Nothing else will feel expensive afterward.

Big Jud's — Archer, Ashton, Boise and Meridian, Idaho — $24.99. Home of the pound burger since 1996, and the closest thing this trail has to a national monument. The Big Jud Special is a single one-pound patty with a mountain of fresh-cut fries and a drink. There's a 30-minute challenge and a wall of fame if you're feeling brave, and a Man v. Food Burger — two one-pound patties and ten strips of bacon, $45.99 — if you're feeling immortal. Four locations, so eastern Idaho makes this the easiest stop to actually reach.

Archie's Giant Hamburgers — Reno, Nevada — $19. The World Famous Wolfpack Burger is a full pound of double-stacked patties with cheese, served directly across the street from the University of Nevada, and alumni-owned since 1995. Their everyday burger is a half pound, which tells you what kind of house this is.

The Dillinger — Boulder City, Nevada — $37. The most expensive stop on the trail, and the menu makes no apology: the Widow Maker is a doubled Dillinger, and the description reads "It's huge. BIGLY HUGE. We dare you." Two half-pound USDA Choice chuck patties, doubled cheddar, doubled bacon, and BBQ brisket piled on top. Boulder City is thirty minutes from the Hoover Dam, so you can pair it with an actual monument.

Bear Paw Bar & Grill — Anchorage, Alaska — $18. The trail's northernmost stop, and Da Bruce is gloriously unhinged: two half-pound patties, then ham, then pastrami, then house-made frizzle onions, BBQ sauce, cheddar, and extra bacon. Everything else on their board is a half-pounder, so this is the deliberate step up rather than a stunt.

Nick's Tavern — Lemont, Illinois — $11.25. The best value on the trail after Newport, and possibly the most charming. A Main Street tavern since 1945 whose own menu header reads "Home of the Famous 1 lb Nickburger!" — a pound of hand-packed beef with cheese and grilled onions for less than a cocktail costs downtown. There's a half-pound "Little Nick" for anyone who needs to drive afterward.

Honest Abe's Tap & Grill — Morris, Illinois — $18 and up. A Lincoln-themed roadhouse with roughly twenty-two burgers on the board — the Gettysburger, the Union, the Houston — and here's the trick: the pound isn't a menu item, it's a size. Every burger on the menu can be ordered as a quarter, a half, or a full pound of Angus ground chuck, hand-pattied to order. You pick the burger, they pick up a pound of beef.

Timothy O'Toole's Pub — Chicago, Illinois — $30. Streeterville, one block off the Magnificent Mile, and the Big Timmy is two half-pound patties under four cheeses, bacon, fried onions and BBQ sauce, with a pile of Irish nachos on the side. Finish the whole thing and they give you a T-shirt. There's a Little Timmy at $22 built on a single 8 oz patty, which is what most tables actually order.

Choo Choo Grill — Grand Rapids, Michigan — $15.99. A Plainfield Avenue counter joint open 7am to 3pm with a menu section headed, simply, ONE POUND BURGER. The Legend sits above a half-pound "Red Caboose" and a rack of third-pounders. Breakfast-hours pound burger is an elite move.

Bub's Burgers & Ice Cream — Carmel, Indiana — $26.95. The Big Ugly, on a house-baked bun, and if you put it away they take your picture for the wall. There's an elk version for $45.25. Read the next section before you order — Bub's is doing something nobody else on this trail is doing.

Cheesy Jane's — San Antonio — $19.99. A 1950s-style burger-and-shake counter on Broadway where the size ladder goes 1/3 Pounder, 3/4 Pounder, and then the BIG 1 POUNDER. Order a shake with it. That's the whole experience.

Sam's Burger Joint — San Antonio — $19.49. A live-music venue on East Grayson that takes burgers unusually seriously. The house standard is a half-pound Angus patty, and the BigUn Monster doubles it. Catch a show, eat a pound, question nothing.

The Big Texan Steak Ranch — Amarillo — $24. Yes, that Big Texan — home of the 72-ounce steak challenge and the most famous eating address in Texas. Their 16-ounce cheeseburger is served open-face with fixin's and a side, and it's a genuinely funny order to place in a room where someone at the next table is attempting four and a half pounds of steak against a clock. It's $22 on the lunch menu, which makes it the cheap way to eat big at the world's most expensive-looking roadside attraction.

Fat Mo's — Nashville, Tennessee — $12.69. The Deluxe is listed as "over 16 oz," and the combo section spells out the situation in capital letters: 1 LB (FORK & KNIFE NEEDED). Third-cheapest stop on the trail. If that goes down easy, the Super Deluxe is over 27 ounces for $15.99, and at that point you're on a different trail entirely.

MoJoe's Burger Joint — Raleigh, North Carolina — $14.99. The burger is literally named the Hall of Fame: one massive one-pound hand-pattied patty, and the menu promises that if you put it away they'll photograph you and post it. No timer, no rules, just glory and a request to allow extra cooking time. Glenwood South, where the rest of the menu ladders neatly from 6 oz up.

Baumhower's Victory Grille — Millbrook, Alabama — $17.99. Founded by a former Alabama and Miami Dolphins nose tackle, which is the correct backstory for a burger called the Victory: double-stacked to a full pound, applewood-smoked bacon, American and Monterey Jack, scratch-made Blanco cheese, on an onion bun.

Hillbilly Hot Dogs — Lesage, West Virginia — $17.25. A roadside compound of graffitied school buses on the banks of the Ohio River, with a Weenie Wedding Chapel on site. Their burger ladder starts at a 4 oz Baby Bubba and ends at a 30-pound Triple Wide meant for a group; the pound-sized stop on the trail is the Big Bad Double Hubba Hubba Bubba Bacon Burger, which we're fairly sure is also the longest name on the trail. Closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays — check before you drive.

Harry's Grill — Anna Maria Island, Florida — $31. "Not for the faint of heart, only for the HUGE appetite" — two 8 oz patties and four slices of cheese, a hundred yards from the Gulf. Island prices are island prices, but you're eating a pound of beef on a barrier island, so.

Denny's Beer Barrel Pub — Clearfield, Pennsylvania — $19. This is the place that more or less invented American big-burger tourism, and the beautiful part is that the one-pound burger here is the sane order. The actual challenges start at a 2 lb Pub Challenger and climb through a 3 lb Super Challenger, a 6 lb Ye Olde 96er, and a 15 lb team Belly Buster that requires three days' notice. Winners get a T-shirt, a certificate, and a spot in the Hall of Fame. You get a very good pound burger and your dignity.

Tun Tavern — Atlantic City, New Jersey — $20. A brewpub named for the Philadelphia tavern where the Marine Corps was founded in 1775. The Tun Burger is two 8 oz patties on brioche under a house beer-cheese drizzle — brewed on site, poured on the burger. Their standard 8 oz Tavern Burger is $16, so the second half pound costs you four dollars, which is the best marginal-beef deal on the trail.

Poundtown Burger Bar — Syracuse, New York — $25. The trail's most architecturally interesting pound. Poundtown gets there with six thin smash patties and six slices of American cheese, stacked and layered like a deck of cards, rather than one thick puck. Same pound of beef, completely different sandwich — crispier, saltier, and structurally alarming. Worth ordering purely to see it arrive.

Here's a fun fact to deploy at the table, and it's genuinely true: at almost every stop on this trail, the "pound" is the raw weight. Beef loses water and fat on the grill — the USDA's own cooking-yield tables put the shrink on a standard 80/20 patty around a quarter to a third. So the pound you ordered typically arrives as eleven or twelve ounces of cooked burger. That's not a trick; it's how every menu in America has described beef for a century, and it's the same reason a quarter-pounder isn't a quarter pound by the time you eat it.

Which brings us back to Bub's in Carmel, Indiana, and the single best detail we found anywhere on this trail. Their menu says:

All burgers are AFTER-COOKED WEIGHT! The Big Ugly starts at 22 ounces pre-cooked!

Twenty-two ounces go on the flattop so that sixteen reach your table. Bub's is the one stop on this trail where the pound is a pound when you eat it — and now you know exactly what you're paying $26.95 for.

Twenty-one stops, sixteen states, one very consistent unit of measurement. You can do the whole thing for $431.58 and about 21 pounds of beef, or you can do the smart version: pick the one nearest you, bring somebody, split it, and spend the eleven dollars you saved on a milkshake.
