Keeneland Morning Workouts

Sunrise Thoroughbreds at the Rail — Free

Lexington's most famous cheap date costs nothing: during training season, Keeneland opens its grounds in the early morning and you can stand at the rail while thoroughbreds breeze past in the fog. Afterward, the Track Kitchen — the cafeteria where grooms, jockeys and owners actually eat — serves a famously cheap breakfast. Check keeneland.com for the current training calendar and hours before you set the alarm; race meets in April and October are their own (ticketed) outing.

The Arboretum, State Botanical Garden of Kentucky

100 Free Acres & the Walk Across Kentucky

A hundred acres of gardens on the UK campus, free and open daily dawn to dusk. The signature stroll is the Walk Across Kentucky — a two-mile paved loop that recreates the plant life of the state's seven regions, from Bluegrass savanna to Appalachian forest — plus a rose garden at peak in early summer. It's the classic no-budget Lexington date: golden hour, one loop, zero dollars.

Raven Run Nature Sanctuary

Kentucky River Palisades Overlook — Free

A 700-plus-acre city-run nature sanctuary twenty minutes south of town, with about ten miles of trails winding through meadows and woods to the payoff: an overlook high above the Kentucky River palisades. Free admission, and spring wildflowers or fall color make it an easy half-day date. Gates close in the evening and hours shift seasonally — check the city parks page before the drive.

Downtown Murals & Thoroughbred Park

Self-Guided Mural Walk — Free Any Evening

Downtown Lexington is quietly one of the South's better mural cities — large-scale walls scattered within a walkable loop of Main Street, with new ones appearing most years. Start or end at Thoroughbred Park at Main and Midland, where seven bronze racehorses charge permanently at full gallop (the photo op). Free, self-paced, and it pairs naturally with a cheap dinner from our Lexington deals page.

Sedona Taphouse

Monday: Half-Price Steak That Gives a Dollar to Charity

The best date-night math in Lexington happens on a Monday: the Dine Out for Charity deal takes 50% off the flat iron steak, salmon and grilled chicken entrées, lunch and dinner, with $1 from every plate going to a local charity. A steak dinner for two in the low $20s that also does some good — that's the whole pitch. Posted on the restaurant's own location pages; Palomar and Newtown Pike both run it, and happy hour covers weekdays 2–6:30.

Sutton's Restaurant

Half-Price Wine Wednesday — Their Words: Perfect for Date Night

Sutton's own promotions page does the framing for us: every Wednesday, bottles of wine are half price open to close, pitched by the restaurant itself as perfect for date night. Stack the math their menu hands you — combos around $10.99 and a daily 2–7pm happy hour with $2 off some 25 cocktails, wine and appetizers — and one restaurant covers an entire cheap Wednesday date, wine included.

Joe Bologna's

The Atmosphere Pick — Dinner in a Stained-Glass Synagogue

The cheapest 'feels like a real date' room in the city: Joe B's has served pasta and pizza since 1973 inside an early-1900s former synagogue, stained-glass windows still glowing overhead. Fettuccine Alfredo runs $9.90 and every dinner comes with a forearm-sized garlic breadstick and a side, so two candlelit-adjacent pasta dinners land right around $20. Closed Mondays — which is fine, because Monday belongs to Sedona.
